Great book for surgery shelf exam

This book is a useful and thorough review, excellent if you want to not only pass the surgery shelf exam (Pestana is good for that) but excel higher. It provides cases in a question-answer format. For example, you'll be given a detailed patient case about abdominal pain and asked for a differential. In a paragraph, it'll walk through the differential. Then it'll ask about the best diagnostic tests, and walk through the answer. Etc. etc. It also provides case variations that helps delineate slight differences in the presentation or lab values that would lead to a different approach. Both detailed medical and surgical approaches are provided.

Topics covered include pre-op and post-op care, thoracic/cardiothoracic disorders, GI disorders, vascular disorders, endocrine, breast, soft tissue, trauma/burns/sepsis, and congenital disorders. I took off a point because it is missing orthopedic surgery, ENT, and neurosurgery topics, which are addressed on the shelf. There are also a handful of grammatical errors ("and" instead of "an") that don't detract too much from the book.

Overall, this is a solid resource for the surgery shelf exam that provides appropriate detail and is easily set up for interactive quizzing by yourself or in a group.

A good combination with NMS Surgery

A good combination with NMS Surgery for the surgery rotation. If you only have time for one I would go with NMS Surgery first. I think both of these are better than surgical recall.
Also this book includes a code for access to the material online through an app called inkling. The format of this is even better than the book and you can access it from your phone, ipad etc. It was easy to scroll through a section during downtime between surgeries.
If you are debating about getting it, I would recommend to get it, use the codes and then sell the book to someone else. I think you can get a free sample chapter from inkling to try first.

This is for kindle version. It is very poor formatted. Switches from colored to black and white. The tables are blacked out. I would recommend the printed book for now till they fix the issue.

Practical advice for taking action

I got the Kindle version of this book. While it does contain information I've read elsewhere, what I liked about it was Arina's approach to the topic. She advocates doing one thing at a time and doing it constantly over time. Where I've always failed is in making a big push and then not following through. Arina says success is built on small efforts made constantly over time rather than big pushes. Her advice for creating a habit was useful and focused on making the habit specific like any good goal. I particularly liked the part about tapping into the emotional reasons for doing something then using that to help motivate me to do the habit. I feel like I got my money's worth.

I really must say this book really impressed me. I have been reading Arina's blog and receiving her quote of the day for quite some time now, and I really do think this book is some of her best work. It made me really evaluate my new year, and what goals I would be setting. I have started using her technique and had amazing results. Grant McCracken is a research affiliate of the Comparative Media Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is author of Culture and Consumption (IUP, 1990), Culture and Consumption II (IUP, 2005), Flock and Flow (IUP, 2006), The Long Interview, and Plenitude. He lives in Rowayton, Connecticut.

Thought-provoking analysis of the cultural landscape

I'm a big fan of Grant McCracken's blog, so I was eagerly anticipating his new book, which postulates that, as he titles his preface, "Entertainment is dead, long live Transformation". Instead of passively watching entertainment, people have become active consumers of the world around them, using ideas from all cultures to drive change within themselves. McCracken traces transformation possibilities throughout history, starting with tribal ritualistic transformations of rites of passage, passing through the industrial conception of working to improve one's social status by imitating the upper class, on to the 50s warring transformations of beatnik dropout culture vs. technophilic "brightwork" culture, and then to the postmodern transformations available to us today. We have moved from a world where one's birth determined one's destiny (sons of tailors became tailors) to one where we reinvent ourselves on an ongoing basis. McCracken takes the reader on a tour of several categories of postmodern transformations, including the capitalistic swift self and the Eastern-philosophy leaning radiant self. I highly recommend this book - it's so dense with new ideas and incisive observations that every few pages I would have to put it down and think for a while.

Fun to read, but lacking a persuasive thesis

I can't be as enthusiastic as the three earlier reviewers. While
McCracken has insightful analyses of trends in the arts, and I picked
up some interesting observations that he makes along the way to his
main thesis, I don't find his big picture--the justification for
writing the book--that compelling. For every current example of
transformation he gives, I could find an example of somebody doing it
centuries ago, and McCracken gives minimal attention to such
historical parallels. If more of that kind of transformation is going
on now, perhaps it's because there are more people alive, or more
wealth and leisure, or more freedom in all things. Finally, while I
was impressed with his breadth of scope, I sometimes thought he drew
his view too broadly and forced a lot of things into his thesis that
are described better with other frameworks.

Entertaining and Erudite

Grant McCracken has an impressive command of society and culture - ritual, myth, Ovid, and more make appearances in this book. But it's also a truly entertaining look at contemporary culture, from Ani DiFranco to Martha Stewart, and Madonna to Tony Robbins. The reader feels in good hands with someone as knowledgeable as McCracken, who got his doctorate at the University of Chicago and has taught at top-tier universities. His insights are fresh and bear the mark of someone who knows what he's talking about.

Original translation

The Swiss Family Robinson was initially written in German by Swiss author Johann Wyss in 1812, and then soon after an accurate English translation was completed by William Godwin in 1816. The Godwin translation remained the standard in English for a generation or two, but by the mid-19th century the number and variety of English translations began to multiply - there were no enforceable copyright laws and translators freely added episodes, changed names (and even genders) of some of the characters and cut portions of the text to conform to changing views on education and aesthetic tastes. There are probably over a dozen such variations and most who read the novel today are not reading the original (the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Seelye, is the 1816 Godwin translation, which is the closest to the original). I have now read two: William Kingston's 1879 adaptation (one of the more common adaptations) and Godwin, and I believe the original translation of Wyss by Godwin is better. It's not abridged like most later versions so certain scenes just make more sense - for example some of the characters are more dynamic, like Ernest shows himself to be a capable bloodthirsty killer like his brothers (a scene cut from later editions to maintain his "bookish" nature) - and the theories on education are classic Rousseauian (he is mentioned twice in the narrative).

This isn't your childhood Swiss family. Godwin's 1816 translation has rarely been in print until recently - most versions floating around are some variation of Isabelle de Montolieu's 1824 French adaptation (William H. G. Kingston's 1879 English translation of Montolieu's French adaption is probably the most common). In Montolieu/Kingston's version, the original ~400 page that Wyss wrote has been abridged to about 150 pages, with an additional 150 pages or so of new material added to the end (with an entirely different ending, new characters, etc). So if you've read Swiss family as a child, and are looking for an "unabridged" version, you may find Godwin's 1816 translation missing a lot of material - simply because Wyss never wrote it in the first place.

What version to read? I would say Montolieu/Kingston's version (and others) are more "kid friendly" mainly because the Godwin translation is from 1816 and as such uses some language that is dated and has passages that would probably be boring or not make sense without historical context. So in a way there is no "right" version since most readers for the past 150 years have not been reading the "original" anyway. I would probably recommend the Montolieu/Kingston version for juvenile readers and the Godwin version for adults - or even better, read all of Godwin plus the second half of Montolieu/Kingston which is all new material, the first half just being an abridged version of Godwin.

In the end I enjoyed the novel for what it is - a great adventure and inspiring family story. Many classic stories are challenging and interesting but not always "fun" - this one is just a great story and fun to read. It's even more fun knowing there are is a whole world of alternative versions available, with more adventures and different endings, but I'm glad to have read the original as it was written by Wyss (and his sons).

Still a classic

I first read this book in grade school, went back and read it again in high school, and held it in fond memory every since. Now that I'm seventy, and have a Kindle, I decided to go back and read it again. It is just as good as I remembered. The story of a family who found themselves on a strange island where animals from all over the world live side by side with plants from everywhere may seem unbelievable, but the story really isn't about that. It's about a family working together, laughing together, and building a life together. It's about making the the best of the resources you have available to you and enjoying what comes to you. If you think about it, it's still popular for the same reason The Waltons were popular. Because this is the way we wish our own families could have been. This book will be loved as long as families face hardship and work together to overcome and prosper.

Fascinating over the centuries!

A fantastic story I first read as a youngster. We find the Robinson family back in the 19th century on a sailing ship headed for new lands for settlement. After a terrible hurricane like storm, the family alone survives and are washed ashore. The crew had gone off alone in life boats, abandoning the few passengers ane were never heard from again. A most interesting aspect of the family dynamics involves the formality of addressing one another, the expectations of the parents as to proper behavior and respect for one another. The author obviously had a amazing knowledge of the local flaura and fauna and this knowledge as displayed by 'Father' was instramental in the Robinsons being able to survive. The fact that the ship was nearby and trapped in the rocks gave the family considerable time to return to the wreck and scavenge for a considerable amount of food, tools, weapons, gunpowder, timber, etc. The manner in which the family were able to creatively take advantage of the natural environment and the items from the ship were described in great detail. The survival of a number of farm animals and poultry from the wreck assisted them greatly. For years I have always planned to read this book again and finally got to it. For those recognizing that 'surviving' an array of disasters that will someday befall us,[asteroids, solar storms, mammoth hurricanes, EMPs, etc] this tomb is a must to read.

D. J. H. Garling is Emeritus Reader in Mathematical Analysis at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. He has fifty years' experience of teaching undergraduate students in most areas of pure mathematics, but particularly in analysis.

Galois Theory in the British Didactic Style: a gem.

Anyone who has at least perused the works of Hardy, Dirac, Swinnerton-Dyer, or any of their suit will know what I mean. There is something unmistakable about this style: pithy, perhaps to a fault, but without any loss of charisma, these authors sacrifice conversational ease for surveyability and structural integrity. With this book, Garling takes a place in the rich British tradition of mathematical artistry.
This is a pretty short book, and while it covers somewhat more than bare-minimum (the ch. on transcendental extensions is unusually deep, for example) it does not aspire to as complete a coverage as something like Dummit and Foote would give. But while theirs is an excellent "standard reference" type text, Garling conveys as much about craftsmanship and mathematical aesthetic as he does about fields and galois groups. This matching of topic and style of course works incredibly well, and here again we find a rich tradition of beautiful exposition (*cough* Artin).
Of course, I shouldn't neglect to mention my favorite part of any text (endeavor?): the problems. Here again Garling displays excellent taste ("Remember that mathematics is not a spectator sport!"). His rule of thumb is to can the (sometimes) dozens of trivial problems commonly presented, opting rather for a choice few interesting and challenging ones. I certainly learn better from this approach - perhaps more importantly, I have a lot more fun. Mathematics is for those with unrealistic daring, tempered
by a dedication so extreme as to make the former at worst asymptotically realistic.

a delightful book

In the main, I find myself agreeing with the earlier reviewer. The paucity of exercises is NOT a weakness of this book. On the contrary, the exercises in the book are carefully chosen and serve to illustrate and reinforce the theory really well. It is really well written: simple and lucid. It is a pity that one must not hold out high hopes for more books on algebra or number theory written by this author who appears to be an analyst. I am grateful for this contribution from him to my mathematical education at any rate.

Excellent intro to field extensions and Galois Theory

Very well written, and the exercises are really helpful to learn too. It has an extensive treatment of fields, which is important to understand well before getting to Galois Theory. Strongly recommended!
