When 54 year old Thomas Scott wakes up in a hospital bed on New Year’s Day he has no memory of who he is or why he is there. Racked with pain from a terminal illness, death swiftly follows.

The next day he wakes up confused to discover it is now New Year’s Eve. As the days pass he soon realises he is living his life backwards one day at a time. So begins the extraordinary tale of a man who goes to sleep on Sunday nights and wakes up on Saturday mornings.

Thomas is a man who cannot form a meaningful relationship with a woman because when he jumps back to the previous day, she has no memory of him. On the plus side, he can win a fortune from gambling any time he likes, but has only the current day to spend it.

Trying to find some purpose in life he resolves to find out as much about his own personal history as he can. Learning of the death of his wife and an attack on his daughter he prepares to make changes in the past to secure their future.

Set in and around Oxford between the years of 2025 and 1970, this unique concept for a time travel novel features plenty of humour, nostalgia and “what if” moments. From middle-aged father all the way back to childhood, the passing years present all manner of different challenges as he grows ever more youthful.

This novel is the first in a series of spin-offs set in the same universe as the author's Time Bubble series. It is intended as a completely standalone story which can be enjoyed with or without having read the earlier books.

A great idea for a story, someone living their life backwards. The book starts with Thomas in hospital, living his last day. It takes Thomas a while to understand what is happening when he awakes in hospital the next day feeling slightly better. He quickly realises there are no consequences for him for his actions each day as each new day for him will be the day before but could he use his hindsight to make changes to improve the life of his family? He also finds the lack of consequences and becoming ever younger is very much a double edged sword. Exciting firsts for others such as the birth of his child, for him are sad endings.
I particularly liked this author's style of writing. He writes with clarity and simplicity allowing the characters and stories to develop in their own time.

Unique and quirky. I loved it!

The book introduced the protagonist Thomas Scott. He’s in hospital, confused and obviously dying. There is a woman sitting by his bedside and she says, ‘Happy New Year Dad.’ Then he dies.

The next chapter Thomas wakes feeling well enough to watch TV. A news broadcast tells him ‘preparations are underway for tonight’s New Year celebrations’ and so, remembering the woman’s ‘Happy New Year’ words from yesterday is confusing for the protagonist.

It's a strong opening.

During the story we are taken, alongside the lead character, on a journey to slowly realise we’re going backwards in life. Each day runs forwards, but in the early hours of the morning we’re pinged back to the start of the day before.

So as Thomas slowly starts to ‘get better’ from cancer he realises he can make changes so he never gets the illness in the first place by not smoking and eating healthy, although he wakes up every day with nicotine withdrawal symptoms until he hits the point where he first began smoking and simply doesn’t begin. Here, I wonder why he went through the pain of the withdrawal when, by not starting to smoke, it’d never happen anyway?

Thomas doesn’t remember his life so the people coming and going are new to him ie his daughter, but the connection between him and his family is strong and touching.

The author takes Thomas through a sticky patch where he seeks out prostitutes and has a girlfriend almost thirty years his junior, which I found distasteful, but Thomas is obviously a lonely middle-aged man. There is evidence of a wife, killed by a drunk driver, and as Thomas is pulled backwards through time he plans to save her and maybe change his sad future.

The author doesn’t take us through every single day of Thomas’ backwards life but in significant periods where the character makes changes to alter his future. We’re not told why any of this has happened but that only adds to the mystery and appeal of this book.

And when Thomas relives his own birth it 'resets' time and he begins life going the correct way but we're not told if he remembers anything of his other topsy-turvy life or even he’s destined to yo-yo for eternity.

All in all this is a fantastic story for time-travel lovers. So unique and quirky, and worthy of a 5/5. It’s British so expect Britishisms.

Delightful time travel adventure.

This is such an imaginative exercise - a time travel adventure worth taking. At 72, I felt like I was in the company of old friends. I think most mature people ask the question, "If I could do it all over again, what would I do - and would it make a difference?" Jason Ayers asks and answers this question in a delightful way.

A journey on the tree of life

... we don't review books that we don't like, or that we feel have no redeeming features. This book, however, is clearly not for the mass of people. It is certainly not for beginners in magic, unless they are that very rare beginner who is just now starting again in this lifetime and remembers well what SHe (she/he) has learned in previous ones. It is also very helpful if one is familiar with the Qabalah and also if one is acquainted with or interested in Gemantia, the number/letter/word correspondences of Judaic language, mysticism and magic. For us the best part of the book, and this is a short book, was in the appendices, where the author explains the relevant aspects of the Qabalah that make his diary understandable, and his bibliography.
You probably have to be a fanatic for magic, as these elves are, and perhaps a lover of magical diaries, which we also are, to like this book, but if you, like these elves, are fascinated by other magician's experiences, you may well find this an interesting addition to your library.

Unique Magickal Grimoire

Lucifer Diaries is a complex magickal diary, and thus a grimoire, of an obviously accomplished occultist. It is complex because several magickal topics, such as astral travel, the cabala and enochian magick are interweaved throughout the book in a very interesting manner. In addition, one has to almost live with this book and work through it often to begin to really understand it. My only complaint is that it seems almost impossible to find some of the other books the author has written to be able to purchase, in particular Howling at the Sky.Update on my review: I was able to purchase a copy of Howling at the Sky, which the author, Roger Williamson, was a gracious enough to sign. Howling at the Sky is another masterpiece of Occult Knowledge, and was well worth the effort to find it.

This is one of the few books out there that takes traditional western magickal practices and puts them into to full practice within contemporary terms. A strange and extremely compelling description of the authors contact with alien intelligances and Goetic demons over a stretch of 10years. Extremely psychedelic with a dark spark this is certain to be considered a occult classic. Very thorough and gives details as to the rituals and techniques used to invoke these praeternatural forces. Not for the mentally unstable or pious.

Once again, a huge contribution to surgeons of all stages

A huge contribution again, this landmark text reveals just how much the practice of surgery calls for the assets of both judgment and craftsmanship. This is a book for both the thinker and the practical parts of all who seek mastery. Chassin's original work (about 1984) was terrific, and this is now the 4th edition. While posthumously compiled, Scott-Connor was hand picked by Chassin as the succeeding editor, and they overlapped on prior editions. She has done a FABULOUS job of honoring the original intent of this thoughtful and clear book, and propelling it into the 21st century by content. She has also wisely chosen to keep including "legacy" operations for the sake of completeness. The title reflects well the excitement that awaits the reader by including the phrases "operative strategy" and "expositive atlas". As a final favor to the reader, Chassin's style (completely preserved) is that of a colleague who is gracious and gray-haired wise.

This is one of the best comprehensive and current atlases of Surgical Practice. Hundred’s of line drawings and pictures support a step by step approach to surgery. The gastrointestinal, thoracic, urological, gynecology, head-neck procedures are depicted in an easy to follow approach to each of the major and minor operations.

This is a must read if you are a resident, student, fellow, and certified surgeon. Diagnosis, operative techniques, complication avoidance, and management are discussed thoroughly. The diagrams, line drawings, etc. of traditional and endoscopic strategies are very well presented. The book is over 1000 pages in length. Orthopaedic and neurological surgeries are not dealt with. This book is essential for general surgeons wanting to review before scrubbing in on cases.

A Sack Full of Gold Nuggets

In typical Tozer fashion, he cuts to the heart of every issue with Spirit-guided precision! Tozer tells the truth boldly, plainly, and unerringly on target. This little book is a treasury of spiritual insights like:
"Faith never goes contrary to reason; faith simply ignores reason and rises above it."
or
"I have been memorizing the Scriptures ever since I was converted, but my faith does not rest on God's promises. My faith rests upon God's character."

or, talking about the importance of emptying oneself:
"The less there is in the kettle, the quicker it begins to boil."
I love Tozer's straight-forwardness and his plain talk about complex matters. He takes the abstract and makes it concrete.
Tozer writes, "It is not enough that I hold an inspired book in my hands. I must have an inspired heart."
Thanks, Lord, for sending Tozer to us and for giving him such an inspired heart.

Did you ever wonder?

Did you ever wonder why so many evangelicals laud A. W. Tozer but lambaste the Christian mystics he so highly regarded? Have you ever tried to practice what Mr. Tozer preached and found yourself at odds with fellow evangelicals? If so, this book is for you.

It is a collection of essays. In one, entitled "Revelation is Not Enough," Mr. Tozer describes a battle over truth between evangelical rationalists and evangelical mystics. The rationalists believe that divine truth is reducible to mere words and creeds. If you hold the right opinion on the stated propositions, then you have the truth. If you can recite the creed, you have the truth. The rationalists search the scriptures, thinking that in them they have eternal life, but they will not eat the flesh or drink the blood of Him whom the scriptures bear witness. Mr. Tozer likens them to the pharisees, and notes the pharisees were the Lord's worst enemies. Hard words, but there is much at stake. This rationalism will kill off the truth, Mr. Tozer says, as surely but more subtly as a liberalism that denies the divine source of scripture.

Who is on the other side of this battle? Who are the evangelical mystics? They are the ones who believe, as Mr. Tozer did, that saints of old, such as Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, can instruct today's evangelicals on how to worship God in spirit and in truth. Whose hearts resonate with the words of Bernard of Clairvaux:

"We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread
and long to feast upon Thee still
We drink of Thee the Fountain Head
and thirst our souls from Thee to fill"

Tozer never belabors or sugarcoats what needs to be said to the body of Christ and his perception and clarity reveal scriptures and inspire the heart. In "Faith Beyond Reason" he targets spiritual birth and the path of faith for those who choose Jesus Christ as their lord. This book is timeless and pertinent for all Christians.

The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.

Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. My favorite part of the book was learning about how the brain interprets goals and effort, and how you can use that to your emotional advantage to make life easier. (Also, this applies to road rage!)

I'd also always read that imagination was a big part of creating a better sex life, and this is the first book to have really sparked my curiosity in a way that I'm intrigued about sex. (I've had painful sex and avoided it for years now, while still desperate to find out how to make things work for me.) The way I think about sex and the way I feel about sex have been transformed after reading Come As You Are. Instead of comparing myself to friends' stories about sex, lately, I'm actually interested and find myself musing on how things work for me to feel so confident and excited about sex. I've come a long way from feeling that I have SO far to go to enjoy sex, to feeling jealous and inadequate when friends talked about sex, and thinking that I'm obviously not the goddess they are because I don't have those stories. That transformation alone feels therapy-huge, to have come from such shame and fear and sadness to curiosity and intrigue.

I'm pretty sure Emily is also the first sex educator I've noticed that used empathy to write little notes to the reader about their struggles. I cannot tell you how many times I've re-read those paragraphs on her blog and in this book, because it was exactly what I'd needed and never had anyone else say before. Emily GETS it. And I'm so thankful she realizes the power of what she's teaching, so this book could be possible. I really think every person alive could learn something and feel more at ease in their relationships and with sex, just from reading this book. Her blog is a refreshing on its own, but this book feels like a week at the spa. Thank you, Emily.

This books explains scientific concepts about arousal and orgasm in layman's language, and constantly reinforces the concept that THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH US, That we all have the same parts, arranged differently. Some women easily orgasm from penetration, and it seems to be a function of where the clit is positioned in relation to the vagina, NOT inhibition or immaturity. Some women will never orgasm from penetration, and that's normal too.

It's all a matter of not just finding your turn-ons (your gas pedal) AND learning what steps on the brakes for you. And if there was one huge take-away from this for me, it was that wetness =/= arousal for women. We can be wet and not aroused. We can be aroused AND wet, or we can be aroused and not wet. Needing lube has NOTHING to do with being unwomanly. Need lube? USE lube. Make lube your best friend (because it is).

Lots of good anecdotal stories to illustrate the points of each chapter. I truly think every sexual person should read this. Repeatedly

Enlightening

Emily uses a science based approach written in layman's terms. I learned a lot from this book that has changed me as a person... even though I am a guy and this book was written for women. I am even more excited about reading it with my wife and watching her find joy in herself.

Sweet baby cakes am I glad I bought this. The first few chapters hands down are the reasons I passed ANCC. I went on to read the entire book and found it easier than Leik. I just wish both volumes came together !
