Baseball Dads, by Matthew S. Hiley

An irreverent black comedy about sex, drugs, murder… and children's baseball.

Dwayne Devero is just like you and me, except he simply doesn't give a s**t any more. He's had enough. He's done with people living life wrong. You'll do it right, or he'll bury you under the bases at the ballpark where he coaches. It's just that simple.

Tired of poor decisions being made all around him, from the politics of player positions on his son's little league baseball team to the philandering of his wife in his own bedroom, Dwayne decides that breaking is better than bending. What follows is a wild ride full of carnage and revenge, led by a man who will stop at absolutely nothing to bring honor back to his family, his community… and children's baseball.

Baseball Dads is a pitch black comedy in which one man takes on the duty of bludgeoning honor back into a sometimes dishonorable world.

About the Author
Baseball Dads is Matthew S. Hiley's third novel. His first, 2010's Hubris Falls, met with much critical acclaim and dealt, in very raw language, with the taboo realities of race, religion, and politics. His second novel, 2011's The Candidates: Based on a True Country, is a dark and absurd comedy in which the author takes swipes at the hypocrisy and self-serving nature of those leading the country, as well as the fame whores in reality television.

Hiley's books always contain a strong message. Sure, you may have to wade through some harsh language, crazy sex, and a plethora of drugs to find it.... But it's there, and it might just slap you in the face when you're least expecting it.

Hiley was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He and his wife have four children together, along with five dogs, six cats, and two lizards. A terrible musician, a reprehensible fisherman, a less-than-mediocre golfer, and a talentless children's baseball coach, Hiley has found his place in life as a writer whose voice is sharp, witty, and unafraid.

Dark humor, but creative humor!
By R. Hernandez
What caught my attention was the title of this book. I love baseball and a book about baseball dads seemed quite intriguing, but nothing hooked me like the blurb of this book did for me. What more can you ask for in a book when you got sex, drugs, murder and little league baseball. This book was absolutely hilarious and extremely exaggerated where no part of this could possibly be part of reality. But that's what made this book what it is. For me, it was a real page turner and I had a hard time putting it down. Times when I had to put it down, I would pick it up immediately when I was done with my tasks and continue on for as long as I could.

The book follows a group of four guys who form an unlikely friendship because their sons are all teammates on the same little league baseball team. Dwayne, the main hero...ish, is tired of the way the team is being run because the coach is giving all the best positions to the children that can't play for squat just because of pedigree. This is the start of where we see a change in Dwayne's personality as he goes from a doormat to some dominant, foul-mouthed, murderous guy that turns the team around in a non-conventional way.

Despite how different Dwayne, Russ, Tommy and Steve were from each other (in every way, shape and form), they interacted with each other so well. The fact that they were so different from each other made it even better because their bantering and all the sarcasm and shade they threw made their friendship almost like a brotherhood.

Because of the humor, this book is definitely not for everyone. If you can't get passed the racist, stereotypical, obscene scenarios that go on in this book (along with a few other things hehe), I don't know what to tell you ;)

Overall, it was a fantastic book. While I'm not a fan of third person books, it was well-written and easy to follow along and the humor kept me turning pages. Also, it's strange to say that the murders were beautifully written and easy to visualize like some cinematic scene. I was extremely pleased with how much I loved this book and even more so how much I ended up liking Dwayne the badass!

Wow...this book really had my husband's undivided attention!
By Mini410
This book had my husband so enthralled, he could hardly put it down...and he doesn't even like to read. He's been telling all the baseball and hockey dads he sees about this book. I personally don't know all the details of the story, but he hasn't been this excited about anything in quite awhile. From what he has told me, there's quite a bit of murder, with lots of humor mixed in. There's also no shortage of the "F" word from what he's quoted. He finished the book in less than two weeks, that speaks for itself. This book is not for the prim and proper. Enjoy!

Carnage, Mayhem and Black Comedy on the Ball Field
By Pop Bop
If you set the movie "Fargo" in a wealthy, exclusive West Dallas suburb, you might get something like this.

Our four heroes have become reluctant "friends" because of the one and only thing they have in common - they all live in the same upscale neighborhood and they all detest their sons' neighborhood baseball coach. He plays the boys rarely and then only in crummy fielding positions because the dads won't kiss up to him. The four hit on a plan to blackmail the violent druggie con who umpires the baseball games and to get him to frighten the coach into giving their kids more playing time. As you might imagine the plan goes off the rails and the result is mayhem, murder, random violence and insanity.

The guilty appeal of the book lies mostly in the remarkably inappropriate, funny, and scatalogical conversations among the four friends. The author has chosen them wisely. Tommy, a surgeon, is literally the only black man in the entire neighborhood and offers deadpan commentary on the action. Russ is a coked out, wealthy, horny businessman with absolutely no social graces who provides the insane energy behind the plan. Steve is a trust fund softy who dithers at all the wrong times. Our hero, if there can be such an animal, is Dwayne, a hard working landscape service owner who occasionally has moments of clarity and decency, but feels driven to the dark (comedy) side, vigilante style.

As these four whine, and then scheme, and then try to fix the rapidly deteriorating situation we get to enjoy the antic madness and the four dads' increasing unhinged behavior.

Apart from what's required by and related to this broad plot there are lots of sub-plots and side stories, and a lot of funny, edgy, profane and irreverent cross-talk about just about every aspect of living in and surviving in a community as unnatural, artificial and weird as a white, Texas wealthy enclave. The author has a good deal of fun skewering everyone and everything. Indeed, if the book has a weakness it may be that there is not one character in the book with any redeeming qualities.

This is scorched earth stuff. It's violent. It's sexist. It's misogynistic. But, it is well written in that it isn't just filled with rants or lines that exist only for their shock value. The book is more imaginative and clever than that. Even when it veers over the line there's usually a method to the madness.

So, if you want to indulge in some ranting, funny, incorrect verbal and physical mayhem and carnage, this could be the book for you. (Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
