Baseball Dads, by Matthew S. Hiley

An irreverent black comedy about sex, drugs, murder… and children's baseball.

Dwayne Devero is just like you and me, except he simply doesn't give a s**t any more. He's had enough. He's done with people living life wrong. You'll do it right, or he'll bury you under the bases at the ballpark where he coaches. It's just that simple.

Tired of poor decisions being made all around him, from the politics of player positions on his son's little league baseball team to the philandering of his wife in his own bedroom, Dwayne decides that breaking is better than bending. What follows is a wild ride full of carnage and revenge, led by a man who will stop at absolutely nothing to bring honor back to his family, his community… and children's baseball.

Baseball Dads is a pitch black comedy in which one man takes on the duty of bludgeoning honor back into a sometimes dishonorable world.

About the Author
Baseball Dads is Matthew S. Hiley's third novel. His first, 2010's Hubris Falls, met with much critical acclaim and dealt, in very raw language, with the taboo realities of race, religion, and politics. His second novel, 2011's The Candidates: Based on a True Country, is a dark and absurd comedy in which the author takes swipes at the hypocrisy and self-serving nature of those leading the country, as well as the fame whores in reality television.

Hiley's books always contain a strong message. Sure, you may have to wade through some harsh language, crazy sex, and a plethora of drugs to find it.... But it's there, and it might just slap you in the face when you're least expecting it.

Hiley was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He and his wife have four children together, along with five dogs, six cats, and two lizards. A terrible musician, a reprehensible fisherman, a less-than-mediocre golfer, and a talentless children's baseball coach, Hiley has found his place in life as a writer whose voice is sharp, witty, and unafraid.

Dark humor, but creative humor!
By R. Hernandez
What caught my attention was the title of this book. I love baseball and a book about baseball dads seemed quite intriguing, but nothing hooked me like the blurb of this book did for me. What more can you ask for in a book when you got sex, drugs, murder and little league baseball. This book was absolutely hilarious and extremely exaggerated where no part of this could possibly be part of reality. But that's what made this book what it is. For me, it was a real page turner and I had a hard time putting it down. Times when I had to put it down, I would pick it up immediately when I was done with my tasks and continue on for as long as I could.

The book follows a group of four guys who form an unlikely friendship because their sons are all teammates on the same little league baseball team. Dwayne, the main hero...ish, is tired of the way the team is being run because the coach is giving all the best positions to the children that can't play for squat just because of pedigree. This is the start of where we see a change in Dwayne's personality as he goes from a doormat to some dominant, foul-mouthed, murderous guy that turns the team around in a non-conventional way.

Despite how different Dwayne, Russ, Tommy and Steve were from each other (in every way, shape and form), they interacted with each other so well. The fact that they were so different from each other made it even better because their bantering and all the sarcasm and shade they threw made their friendship almost like a brotherhood.

Because of the humor, this book is definitely not for everyone. If you can't get passed the racist, stereotypical, obscene scenarios that go on in this book (along with a few other things hehe), I don't know what to tell you ;)

Overall, it was a fantastic book. While I'm not a fan of third person books, it was well-written and easy to follow along and the humor kept me turning pages. Also, it's strange to say that the murders were beautifully written and easy to visualize like some cinematic scene. I was extremely pleased with how much I loved this book and even more so how much I ended up liking Dwayne the badass!

Wow...this book really had my husband's undivided attention!
By Mini410
This book had my husband so enthralled, he could hardly put it down...and he doesn't even like to read. He's been telling all the baseball and hockey dads he sees about this book. I personally don't know all the details of the story, but he hasn't been this excited about anything in quite awhile. From what he has told me, there's quite a bit of murder, with lots of humor mixed in. There's also no shortage of the "F" word from what he's quoted. He finished the book in less than two weeks, that speaks for itself. This book is not for the prim and proper. Enjoy!

Carnage, Mayhem and Black Comedy on the Ball Field
By Pop Bop
If you set the movie "Fargo" in a wealthy, exclusive West Dallas suburb, you might get something like this.

Our four heroes have become reluctant "friends" because of the one and only thing they have in common - they all live in the same upscale neighborhood and they all detest their sons' neighborhood baseball coach. He plays the boys rarely and then only in crummy fielding positions because the dads won't kiss up to him. The four hit on a plan to blackmail the violent druggie con who umpires the baseball games and to get him to frighten the coach into giving their kids more playing time. As you might imagine the plan goes off the rails and the result is mayhem, murder, random violence and insanity.

The guilty appeal of the book lies mostly in the remarkably inappropriate, funny, and scatalogical conversations among the four friends. The author has chosen them wisely. Tommy, a surgeon, is literally the only black man in the entire neighborhood and offers deadpan commentary on the action. Russ is a coked out, wealthy, horny businessman with absolutely no social graces who provides the insane energy behind the plan. Steve is a trust fund softy who dithers at all the wrong times. Our hero, if there can be such an animal, is Dwayne, a hard working landscape service owner who occasionally has moments of clarity and decency, but feels driven to the dark (comedy) side, vigilante style.

As these four whine, and then scheme, and then try to fix the rapidly deteriorating situation we get to enjoy the antic madness and the four dads' increasing unhinged behavior.

Apart from what's required by and related to this broad plot there are lots of sub-plots and side stories, and a lot of funny, edgy, profane and irreverent cross-talk about just about every aspect of living in and surviving in a community as unnatural, artificial and weird as a white, Texas wealthy enclave. The author has a good deal of fun skewering everyone and everything. Indeed, if the book has a weakness it may be that there is not one character in the book with any redeeming qualities.

This is scorched earth stuff. It's violent. It's sexist. It's misogynistic. But, it is well written in that it isn't just filled with rants or lines that exist only for their shock value. The book is more imaginative and clever than that. Even when it veers over the line there's usually a method to the madness.

So, if you want to indulge in some ranting, funny, incorrect verbal and physical mayhem and carnage, this could be the book for you. (Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Very helpful!
By A. Thompson
I would recommend this book for all beginners with not only programming itself, but also with Alice 2.0. The book is wonderfully detailed with definitions of terms used frequently, photographic examples of how each step is supposed to look as well as very simple-to-follow tutorials in every chapter. The text is very easy to read and understand as well, very rarely does it ever NOT simplify or provide examples/demonstrations for a concept. Even better, at the end of each chapter there are a set of multiple choice, short answer and exercise questions to help make all the information learned stick just a bit more in your head.

The only downsides to this textbook are that there is no glossary of terms (a feature that would have been very helpful when it comes to programming), and many of the tutorials are very simplistic--something which is good at first, but grows a little boring when you find yourself wanting something of a challenge. And finally, Alice itself tends to have a few glitches here and there (mainly only in that it can slow things down and even take a few minutes to load).

Overall, I'd say this book is worth the price. I give it four out of five stars.

Your first introduction to programming
By BuyerBeware22
This is for the first edition of this book and I'm writing this review in 2012, after the second edition has come out.

I bought the first edition of this book for a song here. My needs are very simple: I am interested in learning JavaScript and PHP well enough to be able to handle JavaScript and jQuery with a reasonable amount of confidence and do extremely straightforward back-end web development for my planned website. Practically every beginner book in JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP will assure you in a blurb on the cover that you don't need to know any programming in order to be able to use the book with confidence, and you will find that is a black lie marinated in greed and roasted over hellfire.

After you get past the first chapter of these books, which the publishers understand a non-programmer will browse in the bookstore before buying it, every book I've tried to use to learn this stuff starts rattling off the compuspeak like nobody's business and expects you to follow along nicely. When you can't, well, the obvious assumption to make is that it's your fault. And that's not the truth -- you need a better book written by a better teacher. In all honesty, how can you expect someone who chooses to submit a author's picture of themselves skateboarding (HeadFirst JavaScript) or someone who forgets to thank his students and instead offers thanks to God in his acknowledgments for gifting him with natural teaching ability (JavaScript, A Beginner's Guide) to be able to teach their way out of a paper bag?

I understood that I wanted the simplest possible introduction to basic programming and I dug through the introductory programming books available on Amazon until I found this one. I also cheated as much as I could -- I went to my local community college's website and found the introductory textbook they use in the first half of the first semester of their first Introduction to Programming class. Well, a copy of the cheapest second edition currently costs exactly 572 times the price of the cheapest first edition, so I reasoned that for my purposes, this edition couldn't be 572 times worse than that one, and so I put down my money.

And now I've got it. All of the basic concepts I needed to be able to work in PHP and JavaScript are here, taught by a master teacher, Tony Gaddis, who knows exactly what he's doing and why he's doing it, using a teaching programming interface designed by a legendary figure in human-computer interactions, the late Randy Pausch of _The Last Lecture_. Alice is purposely designed to be the simplest possible way to learn basic programming in preparation for tackling more difficult programming languages. It doesn't matter who you are and what your background is -- you can use Alice with this book and learn the most basic elements of programming.

I don't plan on setting the world on fire with my computer work, but now that I've completed the book (in 16 slow evenings after 8-hour work shifts) I can understand a great deal more of the seemingly impenetrable terminology of more difficult books and the future looks a lot brighter than it did about two weeks ago.

Some of the elements you need to self-teach aren't here, so you won't be able to check the additional "extra-credit" projects or get answers to the review questions at the end of chapters, and you absolutely need the CD this book comes with for the practice worlds the author has created to complete the many, many clear step-by-step tutorials, but you can use this book by yourself and get a good introduction to basic programming as a non-programmer who has issues with this kind of stuff, a non-programmer who can't stand this stuff, a non-programmer who has an idea and no background in computer science, whatever kind of non-programmer you are.

Please, have a look at my other reviews before you trust this one, by all means. I am not in any way being paid or otherwise rewarded to write this five-star recommendation. I cannot recommend this book more strongly for the purposes I've outlined above.

My only complaint is that the book is too short. Some of the projects in the last two chapters are a bit rushed and I would have preferred not to have to do so much work to understand arrays and recursion, but hey, nobody's perfect, and Gaddis may have rewritten that in the second edition.

Great Starter
By Stefanie Boros
I bought this book for an intro to programming class. Although it didn't completely close the gap when I went to take Java, I did feel that I knew a lot of the terminology from this book and my mindset was where it needed to be. I think that those two elements are the most important, so this book definitely delivered there.

There is not actual coding, but it teaches you the structure and how different actions will affect other areas. I think that it would be a big help for those who want to ease themselves into programming and it would even be fun for older kids who want to learn.

NASCAR: Hidden Legacies Book 13

The Comeback by Abby Gaines
Harlequin NASCAR Library
NASCAR: Hidden Legacies Book 13
Zack Matheson is making his comeback to NASCAR racing but he's slowed down by all the baggage he's carrying around. He's serious and a loner and proving to be a PR nightmare since he's on his fifth representative. Only he's having trouble scaring this one off and starting to think that maybe he don't want to.

Gaby Colson wants the promotion that will allow her to take over for her boss Sandra Taney after her baby is born. The key to getting that job is to get the stubborn and unsociable Zack to agree to be more PR friendly. Gaby is finding that Zack can be mighty friendly in private but she needs him out there in the public.

Zack and Gaby accidentally stumble onto a clue about Alan Cargill's murder while having one of those private moments. It looks like things may heat up on the murder case when journalist Mattie Clayton, daughter to Steve Clayton from A Taste of Speed, and the New York detective on the case Lucas Haines get together in book fourteen, Into The Corner.

Our very sense of self is a fiction
By James Kenney
Today the thesis of multiple personality disorder is largely viewed as discredited, partly because it cannot be treated with a pill, but the reality is that many people have multiple selves...have you ever "argued with yourself"? MPD is an extreme case of this. Richard Kluft's book, published in the mid-80's when serious work on this topic was just beginning, is a ground-breaking work which is as valuable today as when it was first published, perhaps even more so, given the hostile climate concerning MPD. This is a collection of essays by a number of clinicians, most of whom are MDs or PhDs or (frequently) both, and yet it is not a difficult book to follow. It is sad that only one other review has been written, and even that is cryptic and very short.
It is very disconcerting to consider that our concept of self, our very sense of self, is a fiction, or at best, a useful tool in dealing with a complicated world that is truly beyond our grasp. This book is philosophical as well as helpful clinically, for those who are willing to work with the concept of dissociation.

The Street That Wasn't There, by Clifford D. Simak, Carl Jacobi

SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE WORLD! The pendulum clock struck slowly, its every other chime as usual setting up a sympathetic vibration in the pewter vase that stood upon the mantel. Mr. Chambers got to his feet, strode to the door, opened it and looked out. Moonlight tessellated the street in black and silver, etching the chimneys and trees against a silvered sky. But the house directly across the street was not the same. It was strangely lopsided, its dimensions out of proportion, like a house that suddenly had gone mad. He stared at it in amazement, trying to determine what was wrong with it. He recalled how it had always stood, foursquare, a solid piece of mid-Victorian architecture. Then, before his eyes, the house righted itself again. With a sigh of relief, Mr. Chambers turned back into the hall. But before he closed the door, he looked again. The house was lopsided -- worse than before!

Review of the FREE Kindle Version
By Roger Zeus
A short story (also known as "The Lost Street") reprinted from COMET, July 1941. One of two stories that Simak & Jacobi collaborated on (the other being "The Cat That Had Nine Lives"), Jacobi had this to say about it in a letter to August Derleth: "I had the idea. We discussed it. He wrote the first draft, but the ending turned out badly. I did it over, added what I thought was necessary and cut a good deal."

The story of a suddenly altering and vanishing Earth seen through the eyes of a recluse. Decent story, worth the free download.

(To clarify, and since Amazon seems to mix all the reviews of various editions of a work into multiple listings, I am reviewing the free Kindle version, ASIN: B004TIKRMA)

This is an old magazine story. The story itself is straightforward: one premise, one twist. The experience of reading the story was a slow stroll down memory lane. Delightful.

WOW

Great short story, what's real and what's not? _ That's the Question. Story was a fun read, Simak is a wonderful writer.

Writing Travel: The Poetics and Politics of the Modern Journey (German and European Studies), by John Zilcosky

Interest in travel writing has grown rapidly within the disciplines of postcolonial and cultural studies; however, recent scholarship has failed to place travel writing within the larger literary tradition. Writing Travel assembles a superb collection of essays that demonstrate how travel attempts to reconfigure the world and, in so doing, to become a metaphor for imagination, subjectivity, and representation itself.

Examining a broad range of texts and travellers from across the world, the contributors discuss canonical authors such as Homer, Goethe, and Baudelaire, alongside lesser known writers such as Theodor Herzl, Hans Erich Nossack, and William Gibson. This theoretically rich volume draws connections between travel and narrative, and provides powerful insights into the relationship between travel and the spoken act of storytelling, as well as the more ambivalent act of story writing.

An engaging collection of essays by first-rate scholars, Writing Travel is an illuminating exploration of the history of travel writing, its influence on other literary genres, and the origins of narrative.

Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America (Politics and Society in Modern America), by Mae M. Ngai

This book traces the origins of the "illegal alien" in American law and society, explaining why and how illegal migration became the central problem in U.S. immigration policy--a process that profoundly shaped ideas and practices about citizenship, race, and state authority in the twentieth century. Mae Ngai offers a close reading of the legal regime of restriction that commenced in the 1920s--its statutory architecture, judicial genealogies, administrative enforcement, differential treatment of European and non-European migrants, and long-term effects. She shows that immigration restriction, particularly national-origin and numerical quotas, remapped America both by creating new categories of racial difference and by emphasizing as never before the nation's contiguous land borders and their patrol.

"[A] deeply stimulating work. . . . Ngai's undeniable premise--as pertinent today as ever--is that the lawfully regulated part of our immigration system is only the tip of the iceberg. Even as we have allowed legal immigrants, mostly from Europe, through the front door, we have always permitted others, generally people of color, to slip in the back gate to do essential jobs."--Tamar Jacoby, Los Angeles Times Book Review

"'Legal' and 'illegal,' as Ngai's book illustrates, are administrative constructions, always subject to change; they do not tell us anything about the desirability of the persons so constructed."--Louis Menand, New Yorker

"Ngai pulls no punches, arguing that in most cases . . . illegal [immigrants] were stigmatized by negative racial stereotypes and branded as dangerous. . . . [I]t belongs in every library and should be referenced in every ethnic studies course."--Choice

"May Impossible Subjects indeed lead to bold changes? Ngai creates that possibility, through altering our vision of immigration history, in showing us the constructed and contingent nature of its legal regulation. Impossible Subjects is essential reading."--Leti Volpp, Michigan Law Review

"Ngai's book is a stunning piece of scholarship. . . . [F]or background reading of 'illegal immigration' that takes a broader view, this is an outstanding book."--David M. Reimers, International History Review

"Ngai has produced a valuable reinterpretation of twentieth-century American immigration history, one that will push other scholars of race, immigration, and policy in new directions as well."--Charlotte Brooks, Journal of American History

"Impossible Subjects offers an important contribution to U.S. histories of race, citizenship, and immigration. This stunning history of U.S. immigration policy dispels the liberal rhetoric that underlies popular notions of immigrant America, as it establishes the designation of Asians and Mexicans as perpetual racial others. Everyone in the field of race and immigration should read this thought provoking book."--Rhacel Salazar Parreas, American Journal of Sociology

"This superb book by historian Mae Ngai addresses the emergence of the legal and social category of 'illegal immigrant' in the United States. . . . Ngai addresses the subject . . . in a variety of historical contexts and each casts a different light on their deeply ambiguous condition."--Linda Bosniak, Journal of International Migration and Integration

"Moving beyond the telos of immigrant settlement, assimilation, and citizenship and the myth of 'immigrant America,' Mae Ngai's Impossible Subjects conceptualizes immigration not as a site for assessing the acceptability of the immigrants, but as a site for understanding the racialized economic, cultural, and political foundations of the United States."--Yen Le Espiritu, Western Historical Quarterly

"Mae Ngai's book . . . offers a fascinating reinterpretation and critique of the United States as a mythicized 'nation of immigrants.' Ngai demonstrates the critical role that colonialism, foreign policy considerations and racial politics played in shaping U.S. immigration and national identity. . . . Ngai's book is an extraordinary contribution to U.S. immigration history and a stimulating read."--Dr. Alison Pennington, Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law

From the Inside Flap
"While vernacular discussion of the so-called 'illegal alien' in the United States has generally fixed on the alien side of the equation, Mae Ngai's luminous new book focuses rather on the illegal--the bureaucratic and ideological machinery within legislatures and the courts--that has created a very particular kind of pariah group. Impossible subjects is a beautifully executed and important contribution: judicious yet impassioned, crisply written, eye-opening, and at moments fully devastating. All of which is to say, brilliant. Would that such a story need not be told."--Matthew Frye Jacobson, Yale University, author of Barbarian Virtues: the United states Encounters Foreign Peoples at Home and Abroad, 1876-1917

"'Impossible Subjects' makes an outstanding contribution to U.S. histories of race and citizenship. Ngai's excellent discussions of the figure of the illegal alien, and laws regarding immigration and citizenship, demonstrate the history of U.S. citizenship as an institution that produces racial differences. This history explains why struggles over race, immigration, and citizenship continue today."--Lisa Lowe, UC San Diego, author of Immigrant Acts: On Asian American Cultural Politics

"In 'Impossible Subjects' Mae Ngai has written a stunning history of U.S. immigration policy and practice in that often forgotten period, 1924-1965. Employing rich archival evidence and case studies, Ngai marvelously shows how immigration law was used as a tool to fashion American racial policy particularly toward Asians and Mexicans though the differential employment of concepts such as "illegal aliens," "national origins," and "racial ineligibility to citizenship". For those weaned on the liberal rhetoric of an immigrant America this will be a most eye-opening read."--Ramn A. Gutirrez, author, When Jesus Came, the Corn Mothers Went Away: Marriage, Sexuality and Power in New Mexico, 1500-1848.

"At the cutting edge of the new interdisciplinary and global immigration history, Ngai unpacks the place of 'illegal aliens' in the construction of modern American society and nationality. Theoretically nuanced, empirically rich, and culturally sensitive, the book offers a powerful vista of how the core meaning of 'American' was shaped by those--Filipinos, Mexicans, Chinese, and Japanese--held in liminal status by the law."--David Abraham, Professor of Law, University of Miami

Reframing immigration history
By Reader
Mae Ngai's ambitious book compels historians and general readers alike to critically reassess traditional understandings of and approaches to U.S. immigration. Much of the histories on U.S. immigration and immigration policies have told a similar tale. The United States, the narrative goes, has been tainted by a long history of exclusion, a blight on the nation's democratic tradition that was only recently removed with the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965. Such a narrative not only reaffirms the myth of American universalism, but also consistently fails to produce any new critical knowledge about U.S. immigration and U.S. history. Impossible Subjects differs from these other works of immigration history in this important respect: it proceeds with the conviction that the United States was never a "nation of immigrants."

Ngai examines the era between 1924 and 1965, an unconventional periodization in immigration history that situates the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act (usually signifying the end of one regime) at the beginning of her study, and the Immigration Act of 1965 (usually signifying the beginning of another) at the end. Beyond simply filling a historiographical gap in immigration history, the focus on this period of immigration restriction enables a reevaluation of U.S. immigration laws, and more broadly of U.S history, on several levels. First, it demonstrates that restrictionist policies did not merely function as a tool for exclusion, but more, it created-through a racial and geographical remapping of the nation-new categories and concepts deeply implicated in race that defined the spaces and limits of national inclusion. Second, these categories and concepts, most notably "illegal aliens" and "national origins," are not natural or fixed conditions and markers, but are the product of positive law that, when scrutinized, reveal the ways in which its uses have shaped and defined the United States in the twentieth century, particularly its ideas and practices about race, citizenship, and the nation-state. Finally, this periodization allows for a reconfiguration of immigration history beyond a nationalist framework. By suggesting that the making of modern America rested on the exclusion of nonwhites from the geographical and ideological borders of the nation during this regime of restriction, the book argues against the normative telos of immigrant settlement, assimilation, and citizenship as the defining narrative of American history, a narrative that is confined to the nation-state and that invariably reproduces American exceptionalism.

By charting the historical origins of the "illegal alien" and the genealogy of immigration laws that have consistently reproduced it, Ngai has ultimately written a stunning history that goes far beyond narrating the history of U.S. immigration restriction. It is a book that deserves to be read widely.

The legally constructed "illegal aliens"
By A Customer
IMPOSSIBLE SUBJECTS, written by Mae Ngai, is the best of recent books on the 20th-century American history of immigration. She reveals that the problem of "illegal immigrants," which has been regarded as one of the most serious problems since the late 20th century, is indeed a legal construction. According to the author, immigrants from Mexico were drawn into the U.S. Southeast because the Southeast political economy, especially agri-business, raised need for the massive wave of low-wage immigrant workers and at the same time defined them as the racially "foreign" people who were rendered alien to America, which was defined as the nation of Caucasians. What enabled the American Government and people to attach racialized foreignness to the Mexican immigrants (and, inevitably, American citizens of Mexican origin) were Immigration Acts, border policing, and discriminatory control of visas.
Mae Ngai argues that positive laws concerning immigration policy have constructed the category of "illegal aliens" from Mexico, and the implementation of the laws by Border Patrols and INS has reinforced the labeling of racially alien immigrants. She bases her analysis on the critical legal theory which suggests that laws constitute social formations. Her usage of the new legal theory in her inquiry into the American immigration history is highly excellent and persuasive.
The historical analysis of the immigration problems in this book seems to be applicable to other countries' history. For example, Ngai's insight shall give light to the recent Japanese conservative media discourses on the "illegal migrants" from China, South Korea, and Latin American nations which describe the undocumented migrant workers as illegal, criminal and, in case of women, prostitutes.
I would have dedicate five stars to this book if its text were easier to read (it is possible that I felt this book's text not very easy to read because I am not of a native-English tongue).

The construction of the illegal immigrant and discriminatory US policies
By C. Jordan-detamore
The United States of America is the great melting pot of the world's immigrants, or is it? A white, middle-class, Protestant, European American lifestyle is what the great melting pot of American folklore was truly intended to articulate to the immigrants of the early 20th century. Mai Ngai counters this image of the US as the embracive playground of diverse immigrants and powerfully weaves the tale of how race, nationality, assimilation, and immigration all became interwoven concepts in overtly discriminatory US immigration policy of the mid-20th century in her newest book Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America. As Mae says, "The telos of immigrant settlement, assimilation, and citizenship has been an enduring narrative of American history, but it has not always been the reality of migrants' desires or their experiences and interactions with American society and state." (5)

Throughout the history of the United States, there has been a clear struggle to define who can gain citizenship in this great nation. Ngai's book attempts not to tackle this debate, but rather how the construction of the illegal immigrant came about because "the promise of citizenship applies only to the legal alien, the lawfully present immigrant. The illegal immigrant has no right to be present, let alone embark on the path to citizenship." (6) Her book begins in 1924 with the adoption of the Johnson-Reed Act which established numeric quotas for immigration from countries across the globe. Prior to the 1920s, immigration was relatively unrestricted as, "the free global movement of labor was essential to economic development in the New World." (17) Ngai points out that it is vital to note that this pre-Johnson Reed Act period did see the exclusion of Chinese laborers who migration disturbed the precious ideas of manifest destiny in the West. She stresses that the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was most important because the Supreme Court gave Congress absolute control over immigration as part of foreign relations.

Throughout her book, Ngai focuses on what she believes to be the two biggest consequences of the Johnson-Reed Act, the first being creation of the concept of illegal alien and the second being racially ranking the desirability for certain groups to immigrate to the United States. Perhaps the most powerful quote of the entire book goes, "Immigration restriction produced the illegal alien as a new legal and political subject, whose inclusion within the nation was simultaneously a social reality and a legal impossibility - a subject barred from citizenship and without rights." (4) Ngai points out that the irony of this newly created status is that the undocumented or illegal immigrants are woven into the economic fabric and labor market of our nation, and yet as they are cheap labor, they are disposable labor who can easily lose their ability to live in even the subhuman conditions in this oh so great nation.

Now that this new quota system was to be implemented, how would the country establish what the quotas would be for the varying countries of the world? Easy, they compared it to the approximate composition of the US population circa 1790, a clearly discriminatory and completely inaccurate and unreliable practice! As the rising popularity of eugenics was during this time period, there had been increased emphasis on census and racial definition and maintaining "racial hygiene". "Euro-American identities turned both on ethnicity - that is, a nationality-based cultural identity that is defined as capable of transformation and assimilation - and on racial identity defined by whiteness." (7) In this construction of the white American, those non-white, browner immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Mexico were deemed less desirable and lower class peoples who subsequently had a lower quota for the number of immigrants allowed. Ngai points to Mexicans as a changing population in regards to the immigration and whiteness policy of time, as originally they were deemed white as the need for immigrant farm workers was needed in the Southwest, but then subsequently deportation and repatriation of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans became the common practice.

Ngai wonderfully illustrates how as this period of quota-based immigration restrictions continued, the treatment of Filipinos, Mexicans, Chinese, and Japanese worsened to the extent of which no matter how long they or their families had been woven into the fabric of the US, they were viewed and abused as second-class foreigners. Ngai urges you to remember, these were systematic attempts at ranking races, excusing maltreatment, and elevating the political, economic, and racial status of white Euro-Americans, and not just subtle nuances of American policies. As the US struggled with its policies towards the Philippines, practices bounced back and forth from Filipinos being portrayed as being capable of "benevolent assimilation" but at the same time clearly of Asian ancestry and eventually was pushed towards independence and repatriation. As World War II arose, the massive discrimination and maltreatment that the Japanese and Chinese Americans endured only further reinforced their cultural ties to their home countries and therefore they were portrayed as disloyal citizens. In many cases these were actual citizens of the US, native-born patriotic people who had protected rights unlike those of their illegal immigrant counterparts. Ngai reminds us not to forget about the Cold War and the extreme measures that were taken to exclude Chinese people from immigration to the US and even participation as US citizens in order to protect us from evil communist China.

Ngai's phenomenal history comes to a close with the Immigration Act of 1965. Although this act overturned the racialized, discriminatory numeric quota system, it did sadly further extend the reach of numeric restrictions. For anyone who believes that racial hierarchy as part of US policy is a thing of the ancient past, for anyone who believes that African-Americans and their struggles for civil rights were the only systematically discriminated against population in recent US history, this is the book for you! Sit back and relax as Ngai takes you through this tremendously researched sensational tale of the United States and the construction of the illegal immigrant.
