Thoroughly engaging and perfect for teaching.

The kind of nonfiction being published for children these days seems to get better and better. This is a wonderfully fun book as well as being a perfect book for teaching the scientific method. History and science all in one book, Mesmerized presents the interesting story of Ben Franklin helping the king and queen of France to expose a fraud who was convincing many people to pay money to use 'a force' to 'help' people with illnesses or even just the curious experience this 'force'. Ben Franklin used the scientific method to show that there was no such force, just the power of people's mind and the power of expectation. Today we call this the placebo effect, something the author explains at the end of the book.

I especially enjoyed the creative illustrations that beautifully complemented the text. It was fun to see some of the comparisons the author and illustrator made like Ben Franklin as an apple pie and Dr. Mesmer as a layered torte which the illustrator took from the text and illustrated. This book has a multitude of teaching possibilities, everything from history, science, and the power of words and pictures together. A definite winner of a book and I loved it.

Great for anyone who likes Science and new inventions

At first I didn't want to read this book. It was confusing because there are French words, and cursive writing, and the way the words are laid out on the pages was frustrating me. I'm glad I did read it, though, because I really liked it. I love science and this book is all about science. It is about a new invention or discovery of Dr. Mesmer, and how Ben Franklin discovered what the new invention really was. I didn't like the way Dr. Mesmer bragged about his invention. My favorite part of the book is when Ben Franklin makes his discovery. It is written very romantically, and the author had a lot of emotion and feeling when writing this book. I thought it was very interesting that people's minds can cure them. The drawings go really well with this story. I think this book would be great for anyone ages six and older who likes science and new inventions. This book is historical fiction.

A Fascinating Piece of History

MESMERIZED is a nonfiction children's book that tells the story of how Ben Franklin used the scientific method to help the King and Queen of France and prove the inaccuracies of a new "medicine." While in France seeking the aid of the French government in America's fight for independence against the British, the king and queen ask Franklin to investigate the medical treatments of Franz Mesmer. People with all kinds of ailments were coming to Mesmer for treatment and after a session with him, they were leaving feeling much better. Mesmer claimed to have discovered a new scientific force, but the medical doctors in the country think something else is at work. At the end of the book is a short synopsis of the actual historical record, including details that were left out of the children's story.

There's a lot I really enjoyed about MESMERIZED. First of all is the story itself. The story of Franklin and Mesmer is an interesting bit of history that not many people are familiar. Secondly, the book does an excellent job of explaining and illustrating the scientific method for children. Lastly, I also really enjoyed the illustrations. They illustrations are so detailed, bright, cheerful, and playful. They add a whole other level to the story. Overall, MESMERIZED is a great non-fiction children's book that teaches both history and science.

Here's where you'll find most of the answers

"The Canadian Style" is an essential tool for editors and translators and others involved with writing in their daily lives. There are a number of writers I have come across who could benefit from having it handy as well. The 1996 revised and expanded edition is the fruit of a great deal of experience, as well as practice in the making of this unique kind of reference tool. At first sight, it's not that easy to find your way around such a book. However, once you've used it for a month or two, you'll find that you can go to the right section fairly quickly: it is well set out. Among the myriad problems that it covers, there's a useful section on Canadian geographical names and a quick look at French typographical rules. Whilst you may or may not find this last section of use, it indicates the degree of thoroughness that the book is attempting. All wordsmiths on the upper (slightly colder) side of the border should own it.

Perhaps this means that the Vancouver (not Vancouer) Province found it "a tightly written and carefully edited book that should be in every Canadian writer's (not writers) library or briefcase (not breifcase). I'm sure the publishers of _The Canadian Style_ are grateful for the endorsement, but with friends (or should that be freinds?) like this...

And yes, I do keep a copy on my shelf, along with _Editing Canadian English_ and the _Canadian Press Stylebook_. One of many sources I consult when stumped by an editing issue.

A Dieting Bodybuilder's Must have!

Tremendous cook book if you need to diet really really strict (ie) no sugar or no fat. There are so many lower carbohydrate, high protein recipes here it's incredible and makes my diet so much easier that my boyfrend actually finds me pleasant to live with before a contest. Had I known about The Lite Lifestyle earlier, he may have married me by now!

So many cook books for bodybuilders are really useless because they have recipes with way too many ingredients or the books have recipes that are too fancy, complicated or intricate for the person whos suppose to be eating non stop. So, this book was different. I use a lot of the recipes, they come out fine and taste pretty good too.

Simple but classic recipes for everyday cooking including a listing of carbs and protein content so you're able to track your progress. The Hi-Fiber muffins have been a great success with all who have tasted them, and the soups are "souper"! Makes for a great pair along with "A Taste of Club Creavalle", as no recipes are duplicated between the two cookbooks.

Best buy for those serious about clay

Phenomenal book. It covers the entire ceramic process from the constituents of the clay to drying, firing and glazing or decorating. The descriptions border on the scientific but are written in such a way that you can pick the book up to read for leasure.

Within its pages you will find how to mix a clay for a specific purpose, how to support huge statues and keep small tiles straight. How to fire bisquit and how to glaze (in detail and with recepies, but this is not a glaze book) or decorate. Whether you want to cast 10 thee pots or make a lifesize sculpture of an giraffe you will find hints and tips on how to do it. Everything you need to take your ceramics over the edge.

The artworks that illustrate the book and are used as examples might not be to everyones taste (they come from a school for experimental ceramics afterall) but they fit the explanations perfectly.

If you are serious about your ceramics and want to buy one book that explains the process without specialising on only one type of application (tiles, pots, sculpture) look no further!

If you are new to pottery of sculpture the contents might be a bit daunting.

Fabulous compilation of technical info

This book is unlike any other ceramics books I've seen. The Ceramic Process presents detailed technical information based on years of testing and application at the European Ceramic Work Centre. For example, this is the book to go to if you want to know how to _calculate_ the proper amount of deflocculant to use in making terra sigillata. The presentation and writing are clear and well organized. Tables and figures help quantify topics -- the book even has the occasional equation scattered through the text! Photos illustrate most everything, and other photos show the range of adventuresome and inspiring ceramics produced at the Centre.

Marcella Kelly teaches the Introduction to Business course at Santa Monica College. In addition to her well-recognized expertise in the areas of marketing and management, Ms. Kelly has extensive industry experience in today's business environment. Ms. Kelly earned her master's degree from UCLA and balances her firsthand business experience with strong teaching credentials built through years of experience in the classroom.

Chuck Williams is Dean of the College of Business at Butler University. Dr. Williams previously served as Dean of the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific and as Associate Professor of Management at the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. Dr. Williams has also served as Associate Dean and Chair of Management and has taught at Michigan State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Williams received his B.A. in psychology from Valparaiso University. He specialized in organizational behavior, human resources, and strategic management while earning his M.B.A and Ph.D. in business administration from Michigan State University. His research interests include employee recruitment and turnover, performance appraisal, and employee training and goal setting. At first I did not understand why I was having to buy this book and take this class. Now at Chapter 13 and already learned a lot I actually though I knew but did not. It is written towards a very 18ish audience and leans a bit to the left but in the end it has been a good text book that has taught me a lot.

Cultural psychology is a great book to enter the fascinating world of how culture shapes the way think and the way we act. Many questions can have a cultural explanation, such as:
- why does the US South seem so much violent than the North?
- how does culture shape our parenting decisions?
- are your self-concept and motivation related to the culture you live in?
- is your perception of what is fair and just a consequence of your beliefs or your culture's?
- to what extent is your thinking style influenced by your cultural environment?
Even health is affected by culture. Incredibly, there are mental conditions that are virtually nonexistent in Western societies, whereas others, such as depression, can manifest differently in Eastern cultures. Psychology itself, which was mainly conceived in the West, may not be as helpful in Asian countries.
There are so many aspects of our lives that are governed by culture and amazingly, this explanation had been neglected for centuries. It wasn't until the 1950's that this interesting field began to show its results.

Amazing!

This is a really great book for anyone interested in the ways that different cultures can affect and shape the way we think. Heine provides examples for almost every single concept that he introduces. It changed the way I think about people and my life, in that I am more conscious of my thoughts and realize that my thinking is also a cultural biproduct. Heine is also a very engaging writer, this is probably the first textbook I have ever read that I have felt fully interested in every single topic he brings up. I highly recommend it, even if it's not for a class!

About the Author
Jonathan Wilson is the author of seven books. Inverting the Pyramid was named NSC Football Book of the Year in 2009 and won the Premio Antonio Ghirelli prize as Italian soccer book of the year in 2013. His books Behind the Curtain: Travels in Eastern European Football; The Anatomy of England; and The Outsider: A History of the Goalkeeper were shortlisted for the NSC award in 2007, 2011, and 2013. Wilson is the founder and editor of the soccer quarterly The Blizzard, writes for the Guardian, SI.com, the National, FoxSoccer, and Sports Illustrated, and is a columnist for World Soccer. He was voted Football Writer of the Year by the Football Supporters Federation in 2012.

Masterful History of Soccer Tactics

Outstanding. The book traces the evolution of soccer tactics throughout the world, with recurring chapters on England, continental Europe, Russia, Brazil, and Argentina. The journey begins in England and Scotland in the 19th century, then expands outward.

Wilson masterfully weaves together the stories of some of the most famous teams, the formation they used, and how they played. He writes with the eye for detail of a historian and the writing skills of a novelist. Social and political tie-ins are noted as well, such as the Central European soccer culture of the 1920s and 30's that had strong Jewish roots, the influence of the Brazilian military government in 1970, and of Dutch liberalism in the late 1960s and 1970s and the great Ajax/Holland side.

The quality of his writing far exceeds the norm for sports journalism, whether he's writing about Hungary in the 1950's, the France of Zidane, or Mourinho's Chelsea.

If you've ever wondered about the subtle differences among different formations, such as 4-3-3 vs. 3-5-2 vs. 4-4-2 vs. 4-2-3-1, and the variations within those formations and why they evolved, or for example the playing style of Argentina in 1978 vs. 1986, this is the place to come.

The book dates to late 2008, and includes insights about the formations and playing style of recent and contemporary sides (Roma, Man U, Chelsea, AC Milan, African Nations Cup 2008).

Perfect for the Serious Novice

Serious US fans interested in international soccer/football: buy this book.

A caveat: "Inverting the Pyramid" is not a good place to start your quest if you lack a real commitment to learning the history, culture, personalities, and tactics of the beautiful game, all that has brought us to the 21st century. A basic familiarity with current international club and country football is probably necessary; if you don't know who Pep Guardiola is, or whether Brazil or Italy are more defense-oriented, you'll need easy access to a search engine.

But if you're willing to stop now and then to google "Cruyff" or watch highlights from the 1950 World Cup final, this book is an invaluable resource. Focusing each chapter on a country and era in which a particular tactical form was developed and disseminated, Wilson weaves anecdotes, articles, position diagrams, and much more into a thoughtful exposition of how and why approaches came and went. I was particularly fascinated in the differences in strategy as modernity -- in terms of professional salaries, health and nutrition, Fordist skill-based preparations, and so on -- have been taken up and discarded over the years.

I got this book from a British friend as a gift, and it's transformed my understanding of the sport. It will change yours as well, if you give it a good chance.

Surprisingly Good

This is definitely a book for the committed fan but if you are a committed fan, you'll definitely enjoy this book. The quality of writing is very good, well above the level of the great majority of sports journalism, and Wilson appears to be a very thorough researcher. The bibliography is impressive and Wilson deserves credit for grinding through and analyzing a large volume of material, some recondite in the extreme (club histories) and a great deal that must have been rather boring to read (memoirs by famous managers). The result is an interesting, comprehensive history of soccer tactics since the initial development of the game. There are a couple of recurrent themes. Wilson, as befits a Brit, is rather concerned with the state of British football, and the perpetual conservatism of British coaches and managers runs throughout the book. The corollary, the birth of innovation outside Britain outside Britain, even when fathered by expat British coaches, is another theme. Wilson also illustrates well how tactical changes often occurred somewhat in parallel in different countries, an interesting example of convergent evolution. Some changes occur because of rule changes, Herbert Chapman's development of the WM formation with stopper center half being an example. Others arise as logical tactical adaptations, for example, the development of the flat back four or the withdrawn center forward. Some tactical changes are set in train by others. With teams playing a flat back four, traditional wing play became obsolete. Some tactics, like the Swiss precursor to the sweeper, arose because of unique circumstances, in this case, a semi-professional league, and then spread.

There are some real surprises in Wilson's account. Who would have thought that the Soviet Union would host football innovations? In the 1950s, intelligent Soviet coaches were emphasizing aggressive forward play and diagonal runs. By the 70s, Ukrainian coaches were developing the aggressive full field pressing style characteristic of much of the modern game. Usual descriptions of Dutch total football emphasize its attacking propensity but Wilson intelligently points out that this was predicated on aggressive defending, pressing, and playing a high line and aggressive offside trap.

I think Wilson does make one significant omission about something that has influenced soccer significantly in the recent decades - the development of goalie play. The nearly universal existence of big, athletic keepers with decent ball skills is certainly one of the factors that permits the modern pressing game.

What an AWESOME book! Refreshing to see this type of work come from a diaspora Armenian author. Thoroughly entertaining with funny scenarios that made me literally laugh out loud and some nostalgic moments as well - a real page turner. I highly recommend it to all those who have an open mind and want to read something different. Kudos Mr. Berberian.
