We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American, she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.” It was this creed that inspired Stephen and the millions of other Americans like him, who gave our President their enthusiastic political, personal, and financial support. In this book, Professor Natoli confidently analyzes the successes of America’s liberal Left; he also makes a case on the need for America to continue on the road paved by giants such as Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy in the past, Mr. Obama today, and all Americans who believe in the liberal vision of a society that puts people first in the pursuit of peace, freedom, prosperity and genuine equality for all. Stephen J. Natoli is Professor of History at College of the Sequoias. He holds degrees in History and Political Science from Claremont McKenna College and graduate degrees in Education from Claremont Graduate School and History from California State University, Fullerton. An activist for many years, Professor Natoli is faculty advisor for the college’s Young Democrats Club and was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award by his county Democratic Party. He lives in Visalia, California with his wife Joan. They have two grown daughters.

Thought Provoking

opened my mind to some new ideas and supported some of my own thoughts on things, good read not very dry and boring like some other books, the author brings up some good points on why being a Liberal is not a dirty word and how the term is misused these days. also points out how Liberal ideas have contributed to the U.S and has helped not hindered people contrary to what the extreme right will tell you.

An excellent book

This book is gold for anyone who may read it. For me, as a Liberal, it helped to solidify the reasons for which I hold my beliefs.

Throughought the years, I have often questioned myself for advocating social welfare above most other things. By following Steve Natoli's train of thought I have been able to take that view from sympathay to pure pragmatism.

From a purely objective point of view, the Democratic party functions better than that of the Republicans. I can hardly hope to summize this book in a short review, but I would highly recommend it if you would like to know more about the liberal prospective.

This should really be titled, "Why Learn?"

This should really be titled, "Why Learn?" as it is a testament to the need to develop minds for the continuation of American society. Sounds lofty but when you read the book, you'll understand that our society is really what's at stake. I am in the process of helping my son look for a university to continue his education -- problem is, all over the country I hear that the reason I should send my child to college is so that he may get a job afterward. One after another they gloat over their percentage of after college placement. I'm a realist, I don't want my son to starve, but I also want to know that the reason he's employable is that his education prepared him to think analytically, to write exquisitely, to delve into subject areas to which he's not been previously exposed -- to think! Now that would be something in which I'd be willing to invest!

Our Mother-Daughter bookgroup read this book and everyone fell in love with Beatrix Potter all over again. Our girls are 9 & 10 year olds and it prompted them to pull out their favorite old Potter books and share them with the rest of the group. But I think Moms appreciated the book more. We made the meal Beatrix ate every day as a child and shared it to bring the story a little closer to us.

Some very useful tips throughout, but half the book is about the doctoral degree and the job search (making the title misleading). Most of the advice is standard stuff, but for those on a tenure clock there is comfort in having that advice bound in a neat little package.

Sybil was certain that after she and the others from on board her ship were captured, it was going to cause trouble with a capital T. And how right she was for trouble came in the form of Anka, a man she immediately saw was from another species whom she had not encountered before. The instant lust and need that sprang up between both Anka and Sybil was the match that started a fire that neither could have foreseen. Both the Ferils and the human government were willing to stoop to accomplish their own ends by any means necessary. For one, I admire how Anka was willing to stand up to his own people for their racial attack against Sybil. I also admired Sybil's own stand against her own government corruption. Ms. O'Connor has once again given us an excellent story base on a sci-fi fantasy giving us such a rich and detail story that awakened my reader's mind to such a visual story. - Margo Arthur

I totally agree with the other review, that the story started out a little boring, then it took off. I would of given this book five stars if it weren't for the first few chapters. This would of made I think, a nice series, if it included some of the other characters their own story like Holly, Spencer and Powell. This is the seocnd book I have read from this author. The Lion's Woman was a great book as well.

To me, this story was rather lackluster. I felt bored much of the time and, while there was a lot of sex, it was the same every time. The villains were stereotypical, and the H's lack of restraint was, at times, implausible. I finished it, but it was just okay.

I adored O'Connor's The Ninth Orb, which has great dialogue, world-building and characterization.
