Quite simply, this is the definitive text for shaft alignment work. If you do any type of machinery alignment, you need a copy of this book. Just about every situation is covered in this text. The author does seem to have a bias against "laser" alignment devices, but other than this, there is little to fault in this book. Highly recommended.

There are very few books about machinery alignment. This is the best I have encountered for machinery alignment. The tried and true methods and techniques discussed in this book are what is used in the industry for large rotating equipment.

An added bonus of this book is the detailed history of rotating equipment and related alignment methods.

This book proposes that the method of response functions (MRF) be used as a method of constructing purposeful, credible and integrated social systems' models from data and prior knowledge or information.

A semi-empirical, or "grey-box", MRF model may be regarded as a trade-off
between a knowledge-based model and a "black-box" (empirical) model. It may
embody all the existing knowledge on the process (or a part thereof) and, in
addition, it relies on parameterized functions whose parameters are determined from measurements.

Observations contain hidden information on the processes under consideration
and one of the main purposes of the proposed method is to "extract" and describe these hidden relationships. Parameterization offers ways to couple qualitative with quantitative analysis. This combination makes it possible to take into account all the phenomena that are not modeled with the required accuracy through prior knowledge. Although only a simplified picture of the processes is modeled, a "grey box" system model provides some insight into the system processes. These processes are featured by chains of causality, highlighting stressors and variables responsive to stressors.

The method of response functions is a nonlinear regression method that implies credible models in the sense that they are identifiable and, hopefully, explain system output behavior satisfactorily.

For case studies the authors have selected the problems usually studied by
psychologists and sociologists with statistical procedures, such as investigation of variance and discriminant analysis based on the general linear model or one of its multivariate generalizations (structural equation models, etc.); disordered eating and obesity; subjective well-being and alexithymia. An accompanying CD-ROM contains the demonstration versions of three models that are discussed in the various chapters.

Joseph Boyden's first novel is the story of two Cree friends, Xavier and Elijah, who leave their pristine northern country to end up in the horrific trenches of World War I. Loosely based on the real life of a famous Canadian sniper, the story is told from two first-person views: those of Xavier and his old aunt and only living relative, Niska. After the war, Niska is taking her wounded nephew back home north to the bush in a canoe. Their trip is the three-day road of the title, which also refers to the journey taken after death. The story of the war is told in flashbacks on this journey as Xavier recovers from morphine addiction. Niska also relates various stories to Xavier, believing there is "medicine in the tale."

Boyden is a natural storyteller. Both the Native tales of the north and the grim accounts of the war in France and Belgium have the ring of truth. His images can be subtly appropriate--raiders who go over the top are "eaten by the night"--and his characterizations are excellent, especially the three main players and Xavier's Canadian trenchmates. Eventually, Elijah seems to feed on the death all around him, becoming a "windigo," while Xavier begins to question the sanity of the war and his friend's growing madness, realizing "we all fight on two fronts, the one facing the enemy, the one facing what we do to the enemy." This first novel is set in Canada and Europe during the First World War. When Xavier, a Cree boy raised on a reserve, enlists in the army with his friend Elijah, the boys abruptly enter a modern world in which their ethnic appearance is a signal to others that they are to be treated differently. Even as the boys become expert marksmen, they are ostracized by their comrades. Xavier reacts by turning inward, grappling with the meaning of the war and with guilt over the killing he has done; Elijah, meanwhile, turns outward, becomes consumed with killing, and dedicates himself to being the world's best sniper. Loosely based on the life of Francis Pegamahgabow, a real-life World War I sniper, this is a delicately written, almost poetic novel. Neither pro- nor antiwar, it posits that war is something that will always exist, and all we can control is our own place in it. Ultimately, Boyden writes about life, not war. Linking Cree hunting stories with World War I frontline accounts would seem an odd undertaking, to say the least. The wild Canadian North with its harsh yet beautiful landscape and tough living conditions for those surviving off the land is a far cry - physically and spiritually - from the trenches and the killing fields of Ypres and the Somme. Yet, Boyden has successfully merged these seemingly disparate themes through his telling of the life stories of the three protagonists: Xavier, Elijah and Niska. The two young friends, looking for adventure, joined the war effort while Niska carries on her life as the last Oji-Cree medicine woman. The story is told from different perspectives, moving backwards and forwards in time. The outcome is an engrossing narrative that interweaves the disturbing description of WWI horrors in the trenches with the rich and multifaceted recollections of the protagonists' lives and their emotions and experiences of the past.

"Taking the Three Day Road", the traditional Cree reference to dying, takes on new meaning here, both literally and spiritually. The journey home in Niska's canoe through the lush forests and on the winding river provides the backdrop to her efforts to bring one of the friends home, physically and mentally deeply wounded. Her personal recollections and stories of their past lives are set against the nightmarish dreaming of the returning soldier. Will Niska be able to soothe the mind, will the medicine be strong enough to heal him from the agony of war?

The two young Cree started out with eagerness to fight in the war, having honed their tracking and shooting skills in the bush killing animals for food and ceremony. Their very different characters emerge clearly as they leave the familiar territory. As they began their journey, their friendship helped them to complement each others strength to get through numerous challenges, such as the language barrier, their inexperience in urban and barrack life, the discrimination facing them. As their talent as trackers and snipers are increasingly recognized by their superiors, despite their prejudice against Indians, the two are sent on increasingly daring missions. Their reputation grows as they take out more enemy snipers than anybody else. Xavier and Elijah respond very differently to the pressure and violence. One hates his role on the killing fields and is retreating into himself, the other is thriving on the experience and the attention he garners. Their friendship is seriously tested and the tension between them reaches breaking point. How can they salvage the friendship that they had? How can they survive in the hell of the trenches? How do they cope with loosing their comrades and being wounded themselves? Will they be able to reconcile the upbringing on the land, guided by Niska, with the brutality of their war experiences?

Boyden is an outstanding story teller and his skill of creating realistic and lively personalities is admirable. This not only applies to the three protagonists, but also to several of their comrades and their superiors. Boyden establishes a wide-ranging portrait of the people and the extreme conditions they were exposed to during this war. It is evident that that author undertook extensive research into the intricate details of WWI war fare. It can easily stand among the best of its kind. The author adds additional depth through Niska's story, connecting the reader intimately to Cree culture and mythology. Niska's voice stays with you for a long time. Despite the topic, this is a beautifully written, memorable book. [Friederike Knabe]

Where is Home?

I've heard it said that you shouldn't let the facts get in the way of a great story. One reviewer thought there were better WW1 stories and I'm sure that's true but this is the story of two native soldiers who weren't always soldiers. They had a home on the outskirts of someone else's - occupying strangers with equally strange ways.You weren't good enough unless you were white and no matter how hard you try you can't do it. People only see your skin colour and draw their own pictures. Xavier and Elijah stood out from the other soldiers - being Canadian helped and being true shots (snipers) made them legends, but like a drop of ink in clear water something invades the picture.We get a clear picture of trench life and the walking ghosts it created. The Aunt has her own ghosts to deal with and the power she got from her father. So are you curious yet? I wanted to take all three characters the aunt and Xavier and Elijah home and make them soup and listen to their stories. I miss them now that the book is done.The ending has hope that home was found where it usually starts in the heart. This book maybe hyped but so what? Read and believe the next Canada Reads Book selection. I've got to read it again.

Fantastic story lives up to hype

Set in WW I this book tells the story of two Cree men who join the Canadian army. The two become a sniper team, and the story explains both how they adapt to the harsh conditions of Northern France and to live among a the foreign culture of the white men in their unit. The story also touches upon how their home in Northern Ontario has been affected by the British and the residential school system, and this part of the story is written as reflections by one of the men's aunts who still tries to live according to traditional ways. The writing is crisp and yet very personal, without being melodramatic or too depressing (for those who are worried about that!). I will warn you that the narrative is not always linear in time, but was very straightforward-- you could easily follow the story. I really enjoyed the use of nature in the metaphors and similes, which work surprisingly well given the context of WWI ("I slipped like an otter into the trench"). This book has received a lot of hype in the media, so I was a bit sceptical if it would measure up when I began, but it was so well written and movingly told that I ended up really enjoying the read. I would compare it favourably to Guy Vanderhaeghe's books "The Last Crossing" and "The Englishman's Boy", that set the standard for me for Canadian fiction set in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I think men would particularly enjoy the book (good Father's Day present or birthday gift), but women would enjoy it as well. A scene where one of the main characters translates into Cree the words of the unit's commander, who is attempting to court marshal the other protagonist, is worth reading the whole book. I predict this will become a Canadian classic.

Very pretty book, but lacking in important information

This book is very attractive, with lots of pictures and appears to be well-organized. The problem is, a good bit of the book focuses on shallow descriptions of tools and things and very little emphasis on technique and practical applications of drywall, taping and mudding. The author spends tons of time and pages detailing every possible, obscure tool and "things the pros use" while dedicating a tiny amount of space to ACTUAL TECHNIQUES that will allow you do hang drywall that looks good. There are other important items of consideration that are left out altogether, including how to deal with warped studs and situations where you have to make drywall repairs. I was extremely disappointed after reading the entire book, to only pick up about a half-dozen basic tidbits of knowledge. There's no real "insider secrets" to doing certain repairs. You'd be better off watching DIY shows on television than reading this book. There's very little detail in specific approaches to handling certain types of hanging/taping/mudding situations.

Excellent Homeowner resource

I just finished reading the book you wrote "DRYWALL", 3rd edition. I'm definatelly a beginner with some skill, not afraid to try something new; especially as a new home owner of a "fixer-upper". Your tips certainly have made me understand as to why I was not getting the results that I wanted, being a prefectionist and all. Let's just say that more careful planning and patience should improve my results dramatically.
If you happen to write another revised edition in the future, it would be great if you would implement some examples on how to match drywall to old, rough plaster walls, such as repairing old plaster walls with drywall, (assuming you want to save them), transitioning the two, old and new world materials together and skimcoating so that there is a complete wall again. I found this to be a bit challenging because the thickness of the old plaster and lath wall wasn't always uniform; therefore, the drywall and plaster joints thicknesses could not line up correctly in most cases. Both shimming and shaving had to be done to achieve a good result. Where I live in Northern New England, there are a lot of homes built around 1900 with such walls that are mostly in great condition and are worth saving, but may need some repairing by the floor area or around doors and windows. I found drywalling such repairs to be more cost effective than calling in a Plaster. I haven't been able to find any literature on taping both types of wall together so I don't really know what the long term of the seems will be like - just have to we wait and see.

P.S. The spacing of fasteners along a studd was unclear to me; perhaps it's the same distance as the o.c. from studd to studd?

I've got absolutely no experience hanging or finishing drywall, but after reading this and using it as a guide, I'm actually looking forward to drywalling my basement. The writing is very easy to understand and there are a ton of pictures to help. Author appears to be a master drywaller and is very clear in his explanations. Some sections I appreciated were on soundproofing, how to plan for material usage, and what tools to use. I'm a big DIYer and a perfectionist. While some skills detailed in this book seem to require a great amount of detail and patience, I'm looking forward to the challenge. Already recommended to a buddy who drywalled his entire house (but did not tape and sand) and is looking to finish his basement as well. Just by skimming it, he found a number of things he wasn't aware of and wish he had known years ago.

“Unfortunately, we can’t be everywhere at once,” Mr. Findley said clearly on the defensive. “Students have to use their heads and not get themselves into a position where they can easily be injured or harmed.”

“Like the hallways between classes,” Robyn laughed with a shake of her head.

“The hallways, Miss Lockhart?”

“Yeah, I got knocked down the other day, and I was almost trampled to death.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” Mr. Findley said, more guardedly than the statement warranted.

“You know, come to think of it, how do I know whoever did that to me, didn’t do it on purpose?” Robyn asked, suddenly seeing the incident in a whole new light.

Mr. Findley tilted his head. “What do you mean?”

“Are you kidding? Even a na�ve girl from Iowa can see the potential for crime in that hallway. Three thousand students and what, ten security people? One knockdown in a crowded, frenzied hallway? Shoot, by the time you get your bearings back, your stuff could be halfway to Mexico.”

Kat nodded. “She’s got a point.”

“Yes, I believe she does,” Mr. Findley finally agreed as he opened a folder on his desk and studied something. “In fact, that’s a problem that has just started surfacing. I’ve had three complaints about incidents just like that cross my desk in the last week.”

“So, the halls aren’t as safe as we think they are then?” Kat asked, intrigued.

“Apparently we have a long way to go in securing the building.” Mr. Findley looked at them both. “I honestly wish there was some way to ensure that every student was safe every second of every day they’re here, but I can’t. Maybe the two of you can get the word out so the students can help us help them. It would be a start anyway.”

“It can’t hurt,” Robyn said suddenly seeing a myriad of things she had done wrong in the last week.

“Well, thanks for your time, Mr. Findley.” Kat closed her notebook and shook his hand.

“Thank you, Miss Layton, and you too, Miss Lockhart.” Mr. Findley stood and shook their hands. “I’m glad you decided to join the newspaper staff, but I’m thinking I’d better be more prepared for interviews after this.”

They all laughed, and then Kat and Robyn made their way out of the office. They were almost out of the building before either of them spoke again.

“I don’t care what you say,” Kat said. “You’re joining the staff.”

This Young Adult Romance is the only one I've written so farthat could fall into the suspense category. I didn't do that on purpose.� That is where the Spirit led me.� However, this is also not a directlyChristian book.� Instead, it looks at thevery really and frightening issues our students are often exposed to at schooland in life.

In the story, Robyn has been yanked from her former schoolbecause of her parents' divorce, and her mother's insistence in starting over "somewhereelse."� Although that aspect is notdelved into deeply, it is actually the foundation for the rest of the bookbecause it is from this "I'm all alone in the world" place that Robyn mustoperate in facing the evil that befalls her life.� Her mother is not available other thanneeding Robyn to validate her and be "okay" about the move and the ripping upof her life.

As others reach out to Robyn and she latches on, there isstill this up and down of the relationships so that at one moment she feels shecan trust them with what's really going on and in the next, she realizes thatshe can't.� I think, having been around alot of teenagers, this connection/disconnection issue is huge.� And ultimately it is the connection thatsaves Robyn.

The problem as adults is that we often don't know how toreally connect with our teens so that our help is really help and not just morepressure that they have to somehow navigate.They need to be able to talk, to ask, to get help because the watersthey are trying to navigate are not calm.Bullies, broken friendships, romantic relationships, even relationshipswith authority figures make the emotional landscape fraught with landmines anddanger.� They need someone to take theirhand, guide them, and hold them when the world gets to be too much.

Unfortunately, we as adults have never been trained to dothat, and so just when they need us most, we back up and disengage from theirstruggle.� So while this young adultromance is about... well, young adults in high school, it is also a cry on theirbehalf telling the adults to GET IN HERE AND HELP ME!

I sincerely hope you enjoy this young adult romance, butmore than that I hope it will inspire you to connect with your teenager orteenagers who are close to you, to ask, to guide, to protect, and most of all tolove them and let them know they are not alone.

Staci Stallings is an amazingly gifted writer. Her characters are fabulous and her writing is so poetic. I love all of her stories!
I've read, The Price of Silence, three times now. It's that good. Wait, did I say good? Make that great!
There are places in this story that keep you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath, wondering what's going to happen next, and places that have you crying--so get the Kleenex--and other places that have you saying, "Ah-h-h."
Because of the strong message in, The Price of Silence, I think it should be mandatory reading in every middle school and high school.
Sometimes doing the right thing isn't easy. And sometimes we stand alone when we do choose to do what's right.
Find out if protagonist Robyn Lockhart does what's right in the face of danger, and if she stands alone.
The Price of Silence, is an excellent read for all ages. I highly recommend it, and all of Staci's books.

A Must Read for Youth and Adults

I will gladly admit Staci Stallings is my favorite author and I can't wait to read anything she writes. I will also admit that I really dragged my feet in reading Price of Silence. It is labeled as a Young Adult or Teen Book. It looks nothing like a romance novel. For someone who is over forty and hates any book with violence, Price of Silence just did not have the normal appeal that a Stallings' novel has. Boy, was I surprised.

As Robyn Lockhart walked into James Madison High School for her first day at a new school, I walked right back into my high school. The busy hallways. . . the rushing to class. . . the bullying, the good looking boy we just knew would never look at us. We all can remember our high school days. I was instantly drawn into the lives of Robyn and Sean at James Madison. Robyn was quickly faced with a decision to either stand up for what was right and what she believed in or say nothing and go along with the crowd. I truly believe Robyn did not understand the consequences of her decision. But honestly, do any of us? As she wrote articles in the school newspaper to bring to light school violence and the lack of security, she found her own safety in jeopardy. In comes Sean to the rescue. He tries to the best of his ability to protect Robyn. I love how Staci has woven their love story throughout the high school drama.

Some people have written that this book is just for high school students. I totally disagree. Not only should high school students read it but so should adults of all ages. The bullying and violence portrayed at James Madison is real. As adults, to believe this type of bullying and violence does not exist in today's schools is just being irresponsible to our youth. I gave Price of Silence to my teenage daughter to read so she is aware. It takes more people like Robyn and Sean to stand up for what is right and what they believe to make this world better. But it is not easy and comes with a price. As adults, we may not face high school bullies, but we do face trials, storms and even persecutors who make us want to bolt the doors and hide under boxes in our closet. Standing up to our fears is hard and difficult. But having friends who ultimately would give their lives to support and protect us makes all the difference in the world as Robyn and Sean found out.

Price of Silence not only is a must read for high school students but is a must for all.

"You have to remember that if you don't know fear, you can never really understand courage. . . To understand courage, one must understand fear because the two are inseparable pieces of the whole." Fear and courage are ageless.

Price of Silence has turned out to be one of my favorite Stallings' novels. You just have to read it!
