A well rounded literature textbook

We used this book in my literature class, and I should say that I am not a fan of literature classes, but this book was very surprising. It contains short stories, poems, and plays like any other text, but if offers a wide variety of topics for selection by the professor or the student based on personal preferences or educational objectives. For instance, when working with poetry, students may choose from a variety of poems from baseball to romance. It is all there! Another example would be the short stories in the text; they range from stories of military experience to Asian family traditions. It is not only a literature book, but also a book of culture and variety. It is so well rounded it should appeal to all types of personalities, likes, and dislikes.

About the Author
Neville Brody is an internationally renowned designer, typographer, art director, brand strategist, educator and founder of the Research Studios network (www.researchstudios.com). In addition to lecturing and contributing to a variety of cultural and educational initiatives, Brody works both independently and alongside Research Studios designers on commercial and privately commissioned projects. In 2010 Brody was awarded a Special Commendation by Prince Philip for his Design Council: Designer of the Year Prize and was made a Fellow of the University of the Arts, London his alma mater. In 2011 The Museum of Modern Art in New York selected Brody’s font Blur as part of its permanent design collection. Brody was also made a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) by the Royal Society of Arts in November that year, joining many of his peers in the creative sector. Brody is the Dean of Department for Visual Communications at the Royal College of Art, Vice-President of the D&AD and chair for their education sub-committee. Jon Wozencroft is a Senior Tutor for the Visual Communication Programme at The Royal Collage of Arts in London. He is the author of The Graphic Language of Neville Brody 1 & 2, and set up FUSE with Brody in 1991. In 1982 Jon Wozencroft founded the audiovisual publisher Touch, to push the powerful chemistry between sound and visual media. His photography and design work has appeared in a number of publications, including Fax Art, Sampler, G1, Merz to Emigre and Beyond and most recently Cover Art By. Wozencroft has also taught at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, The London College of Printing, and has given lectures at numerous art colleges and universities around the world.

I've followed his career for years. Love his design work. Thought that I would enjoy reading the behind the scenes, but it was too ready for me. I am sure that someone will enjoy all of the reading, but I have come to know Mr. Brody's work from the visual perspective, not so much the articulated vantage point.

Works of many writers from the late 3rd and early 4th century Alexandrian School

The works of Gregory Thaumaturgus make up about 13% of the volume. He is a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. He was a disciple of Origen. His works are mainly from the mid 3rd century. He is best known for his 'Panegyric Addressed to Origen' as well as several other works. There is also a short 'Declaration of Faith', and a longer 'Metaphrase of the Book of Ecclesiastes' and a 'Canonical Epistle'. This was an interesting snapshot of 3rd century writing.

The next section contains the writings of Dionysius and they take up about 9% of the volume. He was the bishop of Alexandria in the mid 3rd century and was also a disciple of Origen. Most of his works are fragments of larger works that are no longer extant. Many of them are administrative and some address doctrines directly such as the teaching of Sabellius and his rejection of the eternity of matter.

The writings of Julius Africanus were very short and covered various subjects. He lived in the early 3rd century and was with the Alexandrian school.

Next is a section on Anatolius and several other minor writers. These are a bunch of short fragments from several minor writers from the 3rd and 4th centuries. There were some interesting bits in here, but as with most of these writings, many that were of very little interest to me.

Archelaus, bishop of Caschar, is the next author who takes up 13% of the book. He is a 3rd century bishop known for his disputation of the Manichaeans heresy, which these writings cover. It is a good introduction to the fight against this heresy.

Next is Alexander of Lycoplis, a 4th century bishop, who also wrote against the Manichaeans heresy in a relatively short work.

Methodius' writings take of 17% of this book. He was bishop of Olympus in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. He was a martyr and was best know for his writings against Origen. His writings cover many subjects including chastity, free-will, the resurrection, and many fragments on other subjects.

The remainder of the book was the writings of Arnobius, an early 4th century apologist, which take up 30% of the book. The main works are seven books 'Against the Heathen's'. It was interesting to see how he made fun of the heathen Gods, manner of worship, and superstitions. The style is not much different than what we see today of people making fun of religion.

Overall, these writings would mainly be of interest to scholars interested in early Christian history, but there are a few jewels included in the writings that I enjoyed. As with other volumes in this work, you see an evolution of belief in certain doctrines and can find support for almost any Christian doctrine that you want.
