GREAT map

A very large and detailed map of the Hawaiian Islands on waterproof and tear resistant paper. I don't believe it will ever wear out on the fold lines like maps of regular paper. Big Island on one side, other islands on the back. Elevation lines, colors for vegetation/ desert areas and lava flows. Roads, parks, beaches, towns and counties, Hawaiian pronunciation guide and alphabetized town locater. What else can a map do for you?

Yes, a bit expensive but being a National Geographic item, it's top of the line and worth every penny!

Great map but needs updating

The main con for this map is that the new highway on the west end of the Saddle Road is not shown. The road was completed after the map was printed and a new version is not available.
NOTE: This new highway is missing from most Hawaii (Big Island) maps and is something to know because it makes the trip cross island much, much nicer.

A wonderful map! EXCEPT it is not up to date. On the Big Island it is missing the new section of the Inouye highway at the West end of Saddle Rd. that cuts straight off the old road and direct connects with 190. I heard about this from my incorrect directions.
But mostly I love the NG Adventure maps

About the Author
Dr. Lewis is the President of KACEL, Inc. Professional and Community Education. She is also adjunct faculty within the Maricopa County Community College District where she is accredited to teach in all level of EMS courses and is an Examiner for the National Registry of EMTs. After serving as EMT/FSC Department Chair at Phoenix College since 1986, Dr. Lewis retired in 2005. During that time she was also a member of the Arizona EMS Council (Governor's Appointment), and member of the National EMS Curriculum Development Group. She has worked as a critical care nurse and educator, has authored several articles and contributed to texts on nursing care, education theory and techniques, as well as various cardiovascular topics. Dr. Lewis holds many industry affiliations and credentials, is an active RN and holds a BSN in nursing and a PhD in Education.

A China 'primer' par excellence.

Understanding China by John Bryan Starr, now in it's 3rd Edition, is a must read for anyone embarking on a study of China or those just wishing for a general appreciation of a country that has become the world's ongoing 'story of the day'.

China is huge in all respects. Physical size, demographics, social ills and a history and culture going back millennia. It's impact on the world, now and in the future, is immeasurable from both economic and world balance of power viewpoints. To ignore China is to do so at your own peril.

No stone is left undisturbed, even if not fully overturned, in this well presented and well written book. Covering history, economics, culture, social issues, the environment and politics, it attempts, and succeeds, in introducing China to the reader in such a way that it would satisfy all levels, be it the curious, the budding student or the business person seeking a "one stop" overall view. It is by no means definitive and it does not seek to be. It is described by the author as a "Guide" and that it is. It will show you the path and highlight the sights but leaves you to decide on how far you will venture into the woods.

The book is well supported by tables and maps without assailing and, more than likely, confusing the beginner to China with mounds of statistical data that can be pursued elsewhere if needs be.

I personally could not recommend more highly this 'primer' that hopefully will entice you to a pursue further reading on this incredible country with its good, its' bad, its' ugly and its' beautiful.

An unusual structural approach to China studies

This book is considered an introductory overview to China. Well, I have a master's degree in East Asian studies and I still found this book enlightening. The book does an excellent job at explaining China's societal and political structures and how those structures effect the state's decisions and policies. In doing so, the author does not get much into the culture and history of the nation. In this way the book is unusual and, dare I say, unique. To some, the book may seem rather mechanical, but its structural approach serves to reduce bias and prejudice. Too many books purport to explain the entire Chinese nation culturally, but the country is simply too heterogeneous for that approach to be very effective. Other books define China as a slave to its history, but history is just one of many variables. That is why I appreciate the rather mechanical approach this book takes to explaining China's politics and society. That said, however, it might serve the newcomer to Sinology well to read other texts on Chinese culture and history as a primer to this book.

Worthwhile Survey and Useful Tables and Maps

The book has some worthwhile insights and definitely conducts an interesting survey of a number of issues. However, the way the history section is described and the focus on enviornmental concerns later in the book seems imbalanced. The history section is mostly an explanation of ancient Chinese cultural values (interesting and worthwhile, but not a recount of major historic events). The focus on environmental concerns seems like a late add-on, almost obligatory for a western author from a liberal university. The environmental issues are significant in many respects, but not a dominant geopolitical concern to the Chinese.

The maps and statistical data included is very valuable. Furthermore, the explanation of internal domestic tensions between regions and urban versus rural dwellers is also valuable. The issues highlighted are not unique to this book, but Starr has done a good job summarizing them.

About the Author
Robbie Burns has been a journalist and writer since he graduated from Harlow Journalism College in 1981. After starting life as a reporter and editor for various local newspapers, from 1988-1992 he was editor of ITV and Channel 4's teletext services. He also wrote ITV's daily teletext soap opera ""Park Avenue"" for 5 years. He then went on to freelance for various newspapers including The Independent and The Sun, and also helped set up a financial news service for CNN. In 1997, he became editor for BSkyB's teletext services and set up their shares and finance service. While there he also set up various entertainment phone lines in conjunction with BSkyB including a ""Buffy The Vampire Slayer"" phone line which made him nearly ?250,000. He left full-time work in 2001 to trade and run his own businesses which included a caf? in London which he sold, doubling his money on the initial purchase. Meet the Cars is currently the one to get

I'm a pretty big fan of Pixar's CARS and was actually disappointed that the DK's CARS ESSENTIAL GUIDE just didn't give me the knowledge that I wanted. And what is it that I want? I want a book that gave me the background info not on the main characters - but EVERYONE ELSE. I'm talking about each and every other race car (besides the main three) and a whole lot more.

This book is currently the CLOSEST at doing just that, giving you a short paragraph back story on *almost* every car seen in the film, including the year, model / make of the car as well. Did you know that every race car has an individual name just like Lightning McQueen? I sure didn't and you'll find them all here (not even the Mattel toys give you the name of the individual race cars).

I'm sure in time there will be an expanded book as they've left out a handful of background characters (excluded from the book are some racers like LEAK LESS and NITROADE) and they're missing some of the names on a few as well (the book lists Chief No Stall, not Roman Dunes which is his name). Despite the incomplete nature of the book, this is the next best resource for CARS you can currently buy, following the BluRay of the movie itself.

And just to be clear, this IS a children's book so don't expect hardcore Star Wars type bios and stats pages. So if you or your kid is more interested in reading about the different cars than about Radiator Springs or the Piston Cup, this is the book to get. If the photos on the amazon page doesn't help, pick up the book at the book store and give it a careful glance if this is the book to add to your collection.

This book is for real fans.
Inside you will find the description of most cars you watched in the movie. Sadly, it's missing the four cars from the highway at night gang (boost, wingo, dj and snot-rod).
All in all, the quality of the book is excellent, hard cover, very fine pictures and a full poster.

This is the perfect book for any cars fan. I have a three year old boy that destroys these books because he looks through them so much. He likes to look at every car and ask me his name.. this goes on and on until we go through every car in the book. Takes forever!! ...then when we finish the book, he starts over!! ahahah high quality hard cover book. worth every penny!!

About the Author
Brad Wilcox is an associate professor at Brigham Young University where he also works with such programs as Especially for Youth and Campus Education Week. He is the best-selling author of many books including Tips for Tackling Teenage Troubles and Straight Talk for Parents: What Teenagers Wish They Could Tell You. His children's picture book, Hip, Hip, Hooray for Annie McRae! was a top finalist for the children's choice award in Utah.

Jerrick Robbins is the oldest of seven children and has his fair share of experiences that taught him the importance of strengthening the family. Fantastic Advice!

Marriage and family can be difficult, and most people can agree on that. It rarely turns out to be the fairy tale many of us imagine it to be. This book offers helpful and practical ways to make your home life peaceful and generally happy. Life can more closely resemble those things we most desire.

I thought this was a really good book. The advice is well thought out and very practical for almost everyone. Sometimes I would find myself wondering why I wasn't doing some of these things already. They just made so much sense. Each chapter begins with an active way to improve things, and then the chapter goes on to explain what this means and how to go about it. There are a lot of real-life examples, and these really help to make you see how these things can apply to many different lives and circumstances.

Much of the advice comes down to prioritizing the things you want in live and learning to truly love your family. It sounds fairly simple when written like this, but I think we all know that it is much more complex. I thought the book made a brilliant point in that any kind of life can be difficult. If we want something to be different, we should remember that in fact life wouldn't be any easier. There will always be things we have to work through, so we really need to learn to love our life as it is while recognizing that there are always things to improve and work on. I was inspired by this book to really focus on the big picture of my family and not get so hung up on the details. This is a book that will help people to refocus on the important parts of their family and ultimately have a much better life.

Really like this book!

Despite having already 'raised' my two older kids, this gem of a book is still well worth the read. Definitely something I can turn to when I need batch of fresh ideas or even just a parental pick-me-up. Another plus is that this is not some giant tome that will forever sit on the bookshelf of good intentions; the formatting keeps the subjects in an easy-to-flip to order, as well as the paragraph to two of content per subject is just right for busy parents who don't have a whole lot of discretionary time.

This book is a must-read for all parents! I'm not a parent yet, but I've always been interested in the "secret" to parenting because I'm anxious about how to raise my future children. Thinking ahead can never hurt, right? Well, I read this book, and I loved it! The stories are fun as well as touching. I believe that any parent that implements these principles can create better relationships with his or her children. I am excited to try them out on my own children someday. I especially like the Principles of Action at the end of the chapters; they give me something to do to improve and discover about myself, especially in dealing with my family.

"...This collection of essays is a celebration of global, peer-to-peer participation in social media, which is certainly impacting culture and education, in its span of concerns from the classroom to the world. Mizuko Ito discusses post-Pokemon media for children in Japan, where there is a convergence of old and new media forms that encourage hyper-social participation, even a degree of authoring, through personalization and remix. The arenas that allow this most thoroughly are Yugioh and Hamtaro. Yugioh is a consumers' constellation of serialized manga, card and video games, movies, and miscellaneous chara (cartoon character) merchandise. One survey in 2000 found that EVERY Japanese student in the third grade owned Yugioh cards. Each child regularly purchased five cards—cost, about a dollar—and there exists a robust collectors' market for single cards outside of the five-packs. The culture of tournaments and new releases is covered in Shonen Jump Weekly, where the comic also appeared. Hamtaro is a similar arena, but catering to girls, featuring a little girl character's pet hamster. The hamster stories have spawned book, an animated film in 2000 and over 50 hamster games. Some games determine which pet is the right one for your friends, or matches couples much as would a horoscope, has contests for drawing the various chara (or the Pokemon characters). Hamtaro has also spawned an active amateur comics scene. In Christina Schwalbe's essay "Change of Media, Change of Scholarship, Change of University" begins with a concept of Regis Debray, who so memorably divided the political planet into three worlds a generation ago during the cold war. More recently Debray has defined three mediospheres: the logosphere of words, the graphosphere of graphics, the videosphere of television. To that Schwalbe adds a now evolving digital mediosphere, containing the increasingly mashed-up scholarly research, publication, discussion, disputation, and function of academic disserations. To this she adds further comments on the European university and its evolution. Stefan Sonvilla-Weiss, the program director of a "Learning Intensive Society". His wide-ranging essay weaves together crowdsourcing, GPS child-tracking, social networking, bookmarking of blogs, RSS feeds, redefining new media literacy in the public and the amateur media artist. He cites the movie RIP as one digest of the issues. Ours is an era of culture hacking and civil engagement, from the culture jamming trivial flash mobs to the Pirate Party in Sweden and Germany, and looks to the philosopher Slovoj Zizek on complicity. Elsewhere, Wey-Han Tan condemns disruptive un-usability in some educational games, which devalues the game to zero once you don't want to play it again. Transmediacy in Japan is praised as giving a unifying experience to gameplay. The end result is a metagaming: awareness, sharing, hacking. In "A Classroom 2.0 Experiment", Noora Sopula and Joni Leimu employ an interactive wall projection system, 3D scanner, video project of online participation. Technology allows the ancient tradition of the campfire storyteller to expand into virtual reality and (eventual, they predict) telepathy. Brenda Castro presents a Virtual Art Garden, online GUI collaboration produced as a learning community for study of historical images as "plants", paintings viewed for scholarly understanding between the digital foliage. Adobe Breeze, the virtual world Second Life, the data glove and light pen all figured in various experiments in an ubiquitous computing model enhancing and enlivening the classroom. In other chapters, Tere Vaden of Wikiworlds personal Finnish University is interviewed by Juha Varto, and David Gauntlett shares answers he solicited on Web 2.0 issues, finding its origins in 1980s bulletin boards. Gauntlett notes an ongoing evolution of media manipulation into a hobby not a job. In one of the most theoretical of the essays here focused on transformations in the arts, Eduardo Navas' taxonomy of mashups breaks into discreet genera. The first is that of Regressive mashups, said to occur after two or more previously released songs are mashed. Frederick Jameson, J.-F. Lyotard and Theodor Adorno's theory of regression are all mustered in support, and the Macintosh graphic user interface introduced as mashup of a desktop metaphor. Reflexive mashup, such as a news feed, regulate constant change with respect to the work's remix history. Examples of this kind are Jamaican dub mixes, or disco remixes for longer stretches of nonstop dancing, that add and subtract audio elements. The Reflexive remix both require and showcases the track's history. Finally, Regenerative remixes are ahistorical updates that change the initial musical or audio data itself. But the mashup historian's question is: do Regenerative remixes mark an end to critical distance, in a youth culture where ahistoricity is the norm? Doris Gassert brings up Fight Club (1999) content and form, questioning the aesthetics of narrative in its process to digital form. Torsten Meyer contemplates writers block and its solution when posed with the enormity of the world. The writer contrasts the art exhibition Documenta 11, which was multi-site, disorganized, not user-friendly, with friendlier books, citations, and cyberhistory (an examination of CERN and its role in creation of the World Wide Web). Meyer years for some organizing principle, like Brunelleschi's perspective, productively imposed upon the architecture of his Florentine Baptistry. Axel Bruns calls the act of remixing mashups "produsage", a term which appropriately reads like sausage. A process dating back to 1920s Dada collages, it now flourishes in Wikipedia, Flickr, YouTube and Wikileaks. It is encouraged under the Creative Commons standard, where media is considered open source, unfinish and continuous, common property, probably giving the originator more intellectual rewards and citation than financial ones. Guitarist Robert Fripp said the pop music industry is "founded on exploitation, oiled by deceipt, riven with theft and fueled by greed". Note that the online newsletter Rock & Rap Confidential often headlines articles under the category Who Needs the Record Industry? Some mashup models call to mind the Museum of Jurassic Technology in California, a site of fiction that helps one to understand a greater truth about our understanding of science. Henry Jenkins - long interested in established and emerging artists' contexts - documents the Macarthur Foundation-funded Project New Media teacher's guide, and the use of Ricardo Pitts-Wiley's "Moby Dick: Then and Now" at Rhode Island Correctional facility. Residents in the facility contributed metaphors of the color white, where the drug industry serves as whaling, Elijah sees the attack on New York on 9/11, and Ishmael is a Navy Seal with a dishonorable discharge for his drug habit. Jenkins laments that schools ignore other versions of a work in pop media of the classics, such as the myriad movie versions (which are watched intently in English literature classes in other nations, like Japan). One solution was that discovered by Tim Rollins and K.O.S., (Kids of Survival)in the 1980s, a struggling high school literature teacher and his students who painted upon the pages of a text. Stefan Sonvilla-Weiss is professor of eLearning in Visual Culture and head of the international MA-programme ePedagogy Design Visual Knowledge Building at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. He studied philosophy, graphics, art and design education and communication theory in Salzburg, Vienna (MA, PhD) and the MIT Boston. During the 1980s and 90s he worked as cross-over artist, multi-media producer, university teacher and project manager. Previous to the professor appointment in 2003, he held the position of a research group leader at the EUN in Brussels.

His research interests are in the visual knowledge building in collaborative learning processes, and the media-didactical implications how technology, pedagogy and organizational structure influence and constrain each other in the process of educational change. He has served as external assessor and reviewer for a number of scientific and research bodies, including the European Commission in the Programmes IST, eLearning, Media, Erasmus, etc. and has received several honours and scholarships.

Really helps explain voting to young kids

I bought this book to try to explain voting to my four year old twins and I think it really helped. Using brightly-colored photos with some "digital enhancement" and simple text, the book describes how five kids voted whether to get a goldfish or a hermit crab for a class pet. All the steps are shown: discussing the pros and cons, filling out ballots, counting the votes, etc. At the end, the book ties the discussion to official voting, and shows one of the children in the class going to a polling place with his mom. I haven't seen a better book on this subject for young children.
