Review
"I have rarely been in a position to recommend a book with more enthusiasm. It is an extremely lucid introduction to theories of myth and is accessible to those with no prior knowledge. The book is the most comprehensive of its kind - and the most useful." Robert L. Fowler, University of Bristol

"An integrated, historical, broad-based, wide-ranging general study of the interpretation of myth that covers all the major schools and shows how they relate to one another, grow out of one another and are still interesting today. He enlightens his deep understanding with wit and delight and a clear, lucent style. A superb achievement." Barry Powell, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"What Csapo has done is lucid, illuminating, refreshing and extremely informative. I recommend it to anyone looking for an intellectually engaging overview of theories of interpretation of myth." University of Toronto Quarterly

"It should certainly be in all academic libraries." Journal of Classics Teaching

"It is a pity that J.G. Frazer appropriated the title "The Golden Bough". This image is far better suited to Csapo's luminous guide through a forest difficult to see for the trees." Phoenix

The Best of its Type
By Johnny McGuy
Csapo's book is a must-read for anyone interested in myth theory, especially as it pertains to Greco-Roman myth. Not only does he give detailed explanations of the theories he covers, but he also does a good job of explaining the cultural milieu from which each theory arose. This cultural approach makes it easy for him to draw attention to some of the weaknesses of each theory (though he treats all of them with the appropriate respect). My one warning would be that, while his style is pretty easy to follow, the book can be a bit dense at times, and might alienate those who don't already have a working knowledge of most of these theories. So, while I wouldn't recommend this book for high school students looking to cut their teeth on myth theory (Alan Dundes' 'Sacred Narratives' or Fritz Graf's 'Greek Mythology' would be better for that), this book is a real treasure for more advanced students, and will even help those already acquainted with the ideas gain fresh perspectives on them.

Insightful, but it assumes that the reader already possesses a robust liberal arts education
By Amazon Customer
This book is insightful, erudite, and engagingly written. Unfortunately, it is not particularly accessible. It assumes that the reader already possesses a tremendous amount of background knowledge, despite the author's assurance in the preface that "[t]his is an introduction: I require nothing of the reader but an inquiring mind." To the author's credit, the book does not require a background in mythology or any language other than English; it does, however, require a robust liberal arts education.

Take for example this passage from pages 29-30 (available in the Amazon preview): "Miller's 'noble Aryas' sits at an opposite end of the Victorian imaginary from James Frazer's savage: the childish romantic and dreamy Aryas, whose very impracticality is a protest against utilitarianism and economic determinism, could hardly be more different, as he stares gooey-eyed at the sunrise like Dickens's Sissy Jupe at a circus, from Frazer's hardheaded Gradgrindian savage who is interested in nothing but reason, economic productivity, and applied science." Now, some of these obscurities are the topic of the surrounding chapter, and so they are admirably well explained elsewhere. However, it is more or less assumed that the reader is already familiar with imaginaries in general, the Victorian imaginary in partiular, romanticism, utilitarianism, and the characters of Charles Dickens's "Hard Times." Passages like this abound.

(Just for fun, here's an especially difficult passage from earlier in the same paragraph. It begins as a relatively straightforward summary of the discussion that precedes it, but it quickly descends into dense, unelucidated jargon: "In section 2.1 we noted the contradiction whereby Europeans regarded the same primitives at once as "noble savages" and subhuman. Much depended upon the European's attitude to developments in his own society, and particularly whether he thought the trends of recent history degenerative or progressive. To this extent Muller's theory had a more fundamentally deteriorationist appeal in sympathy with religious orthodoxy and aristocratic distemper in an age of growing materialism and bourgeois hegemony.")

This is a good book for intellectuals or advanced students. For true beginners, Robert Segal's "Myth: A Very Short Introduction" might be a better choice. Both books introduce common scholarly perspectives on myth. Segal's is more accessible; Csapo's engages with those perspectives more critically.

--Edited 3/25/2014--

I removed a "[sic.]" from this review today. I had thought that he had misused the word "imaginaries" in a passage that I quoted, and so I had marked that perceived misuse with a "[sic.]". But I've recently become acquainted with "imaginary" as a sociological term, and as far as I can tell, he's using it correctly. My mistake!

Reveals the lapse in western philosophy
By Christopher Gontar
This book is a clear historical presentation of approaches to myth, yet it suffers from the failure of philosophy and science to make notable progress in this area. No valid and single most important meaning for myth is recognized in western academe, or indeed the world at large. There was not any one fundamental reading until I myself in recent years presented what is likely the most basal theory of tragedy. If and when academe finally acquiesces to reason and to this viable new theoretical paradigm, one will continue to see Aristotle, Hegel or Nietzsche mentioned as the central figures of tragic theory. But one ought to add a fourth, at the very least of equal importance to those others: Gontar.

Despite those efforts, both good and bad, our students are still not being taught what myth is essentially. Even a complete theory could remain open to individual expansion or improvement, and not be paraded as monolithic truth. Yet none of those scenarios has unfolded.

Skeptics, whether of the Socratic or a more scientific temperament, might be viewing the failure of theories as evidence in their favor. Scholars such as Stephen Halliwell have thought about limits to rational mythology. Those concerns should be lent a voice by Csapo, because mythology uniquely exhibits the theme of limits both in its object and as do all studies or sciences. That is, heroism is a quest for knowledge or power, so that the study of mythological heroism must ultimately be regarding itself. This would fit the literary atmosphere of Csapo's last chapter and epilogue in which the book's main topic all but disappears. But none of this means that we cannot better understand myth, and ourselves in terms of it.

Psychology should be given a more central place in this book. Csapo does not mention that psychologists of the early 20th century had the beginnings of a theory of myth more sophisticated than the vague associations with this field, that he describes in Chapter 3. In that chapter, as also by Freud himself, various isolated elements of myth are treated often symbolically. The point of view is of an individual, perhaps archaic unconscious, or one free of context and ahistorical. Freud's ambitions for the theory of myth, unfulfilled though expressed in his letters, went much further than this. Csapo, like other theorists generally, does not recognize that the notion of collective unconscious if properly applied points toward a strong theory yet unpresented, as Jung and a much more obscure writer, Clarence O. Cheney, also suggest. While he cannot present what is simply absent from philosophy and theory (a coveted explanation of the central meaning of myth), Csapo could have better evaluated the several theoretical schools in terms of what level of contribution they make. Anthropology here should be recognized as marginal. In his famous treatment of myths including Oedipus the King, Lvi-Strauss apparently rested an entire reading on the premise that there was a transition, contemporary with the origin of myths, with regard to the rules of marriage or the periphery of society and to which myths responded. There was no such contemporary movement at the time in antiquity. In later anthropology, Jean-Pierre Vernant and more recently Jean-Joseph Gioux (see the latter's Oedipus, Philosopher, Stanford Press) have fared no better, contributing only still more trivial and pedantic ideas.

Amajor review of New Labour's foreign policy from leading experts. This bookre-imagines policy thinking, away from Churchill's idea of Britain as at the intersection of 'three circles' (the English speaking world, Europe, and the Commonwealth) and towards a new conceptual model that takes into account identity, ethics and power.

The Kill: A Novel (Maeve Kerrigan Novels), by Jane Casey

Detective Maeve Kerrigan is away for a colleague's wedding, and she's enjoying an excuse to spend a beautiful fall weekend relaxing in the English countryside. It's a much-needed break from the grit and grime of her daily life on the London police force. But even at a wedding, the job is never far away.

Midway through the reception, Maeve and her abrasive but loyal partner on the police force, DI Josh Derwent, are called back to London. A fellow policeman has been murdered, in a compromising position in a public park at night. And when Maeve and Derwent arrive to speak with the victim's family, his wife and daughter are surprisingly cold and reticent, which adds further layers of complexity to an already delicate investigation. And Maeve knows the victim and his family aren't the only ones with things to hide: the dark secret that her boss, Superintendent Godley, has been keeping for years is threatening to blow up in his face, and if that happens, they'll all be caught in the aftermath.

Pulled between her loyalties to Godley, Derwent, the victim of a murder, and her own driving sense of right and wrong, Maeve will be forced to decide how much she's willing to risk in the name of justice in The Kill, Jane Casey's most intimate, compelling novel yet.

My favourite crime series.
By Liz Barnsley
Thank you to the author and publisher for the review copy.

Maeve Kerrigan is used to investigating murders. But this time a killer has struck far too close to home…
When a police officer is found shot dead in his car, DC Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent take on the investigation. But nothing about the case prepares them for what happens next: a second policeman dies . . . and then another . . .
The Metropolitan Police struggle to carry out their usual duties, but no one knows where or how this cop killer will strike again. While London disintegrates into lawlessness Maeve’s world starts to fall apart too. For if the police can’t keep themselves safe, how can they protect anyone else?

The fifth adventure for Maeve Kerrigan already – seems like only yesterday I started that journey and these days a new Jane Casey book is always one of the highlights of the year for me, so when this one dropped through my letterbox I promised myself that the weekend would belong to Maeve and Derwent. As it happened only a couple of hours overall was required which should tell you just how addictive these books are – plus of course there is my huge literary crush on Derwent, a character who, if he came to life, would be fighting us off as I know I am far from being the only one. Hey he would love it! And I’d win….

In this instalment, police officers are dying and there appears to be no rhyme nor reason to it – no-one is safe, not even Maeve’s nearest and dearest and the fact that I don’t believe Ms Casey would be adverse at any point to killing off one of our favourite characters kept me right on the edge of my seat. Add to that some of the ongoing threads of Maeve’s story starting to come to a head, and Im surprised I didnt suffer more than the odd papercut in my desperation to keep turning the pages.

Crime fiction being one of the most popular genre’s, it is hard to keep things fresh and new, keep the reader involved in the characters and the story but in this case it seems almost effortless. There is a beautiful ebb and flow to these novels overall, not just in this particular story but as an ongoing tale – with each new book you sink deeper into this world and each time there is something new to learn about the characters, their motivations and their relationship to each other, all influenced and impacted by what has gone before. On top of that each one has its own complete story within whichever current mystery is being unravelled – you can actually pick up any single one and not feel like you are missing anything. There is a subtlety to the writing that lets you know the things you need to know without the use of endless exposition and “previously on” type paragraphs that can take a constant reader out of the equation – in that respect these are perhaps some of the most cleverly constructed crime novels out there. I’m not constantly thinking “I KNOW this already I’ve read them all for heavens sake!” but equally I’m reminded gently of what has led us here. That is not easy to achieve – I know, I read a lot of crime fiction.

I often see these described as Police Procedurals, and I guess thats a fair description if you are looking solely at the basics. But personally I dislike that tag for the Kerrigan series, it gives the impression that this is “by numbers” writing. It is anything but – it is the art of creating a group of characters, putting them into varying and often dangerous situations and letting them live. It just so happens that in this case they are Police Officers, but thats not all that they are by any means, and there is nothing generic or standard to be found here. Jane Casey has a humerous and realistic touch that just makes everything brighter and more substantial. Magic on the page yet set in the real world.

I love Maeve. I love that she’s a bit useless sometimes but also intuitive, loyal and lovely. I ADORE Derwent with every fibre of my being despite the fact that as a woman I should probably often frown at his antics and show some disapproval. But hey, I’ve always been one for the bad boys. Surrounding them are many more authentic and often enigmatic characters, none of which you would want to be without – and here we are full circle to earlier in my review – edge of the seat stuff!

Anyway, I guess you can say I kind of liked this one. Now I’m going away to deal with my Derwent withdrawal. Sigh.

5 bright shiny stars plus an extra gold star just because. Go read them now. Go on…I promise you won’t be sorry.

Who is killing the cops?
By Denise Crawford
This is the 3rd book featuring DC Maeve Kerrigan that I have read though it is actually the 5th in the series. As always, I think one enjoys a series more if it is read, in order, from the beginning. The author does a good job giving enough backstory to keep a less faithful reader in the loop, however, and I didn't feel completely lost.

Maeve and her boyfriend, Rob, are enjoying an evening wedding in Somerset with the rest of her team when she is sent back to London with DI Josh Derwent -- there's been a murder -- a police officer has been shot dead inside a car in Richmond Park. But that's just the beginning. Even as the manhunt and investigation ramp up, more cops are killed. Are these killings connected? The case is complicated from the beginning and the narrative is solid police procedural.

The only jarring note is the constant emotional barrage from spending time inside Maeve's head with her relationship issues, her ambivalence toward Josh, her reactions to being a female in the police, and her self-esteem concerns. Perhaps I am in the minority, but I don't like Derwent and I definitely don't want Maeve to end up with him romantically. For all her rushing heedlessly alone into dangerous situations, she really comes off at times as immature and wishy washy.

Also, I'm American and I noticed the anti-gun sentiment. I can't for the life of me understand how police in the UK do not carry weapons on the streets or in their patrol vehicles. It seems like, since the criminals might have guns, that tasers, handcuffs, or batons aren't quite enough in confrontations and when going door to door -- there are some real crazies out there!

Despite all, I do enjoy this series and will look for the next book by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-book ARC to review.

"We are vulnerable."
By E. Bukowsky
In Jane Casey's "The Kill," Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is attending the wedding of a fellow police officer in Somerset when Superintendent Charles Godley dispatches her and her partner to investigate the murder of Terence Hammond. Detective Sergeant Hammond was an off-duty police officer who stopped his car in a wooded area of southwest London on his way home from work. Someone shot the forty-two year old Hammond, a married man and the father of two children, and subsequently drove away from the scene. There are few clues, although there is plenty of speculation: Was Hammond having an affair? Had he made enemies in the line of duty? Could this have been a random shooting?

Maeve Kerrigan is an insightful sleuth who notices things her colleagues often miss. Being paired with Detective Inspector Josh Derwent is no walk in the park, however. Derwent is a sexist pig and a pain in the neck. When the two of them interrogate witnesses, Kerrigan repeatedly has to smooth things over when Josh makes his usual tactless and offensive remarks. Maeve puts up with his shenanigans because she knows that he is a dedicated and hard-working individual who would do anything to protect her from harm.

What makes "The Kill" so absorbing is not its forensic or investigative details as much as the narrative's psychological underpinnings. Maeve and Josh are caught up in departmental politics, never a pleasant situation; something serious is troubling Godley, but he will not reveal what it is; and Maeve is guilt-ridden, since she is keeping a secret that, if revealed, would destroy the career of someone whom she greatly admires. While the detectives try in vain to solve the Hammond case, fresh episodes of horrific violence claim still more victims. Casey has written another puzzling and involving police procedural with nicely drawn characters, a gripping plot, and a fair amount of sardonic humor. The finale is action-packed and exciting, albeit a bit far-fetched. Readers who prefer tidy conclusions may be annoyed by the cliffhanger ending, but fans of Maeve Kerrigan will not want to miss the latest entry in this consistently absorbing series.

Your software needs to leverage multiple cores, handle thousands of users and terabytes of data, and continue working in the face of both hardware and software failure. Concurrency and parallelism are the keys, and Seven Concurrency Models in Seven Weeks equips you for this new world. See how emerging technologies such as actors and functional programming address issues with traditional threads and locks development. Learn how to exploit the parallelism in your computer's GPU and leverage clusters of machines with MapReduce and Stream Processing. And do it all with the confidence that comes from using tools that help you write crystal clear, high-quality code. This book will show you how to exploit different parallel architectures to improve your code's performance, scalability, and resilience. You'll learn about seven concurrency models: threads and locks, functional programming, separating identity and state, actors, sequential processes, data parallelism, and the lambda architecture.Learn about the perils of traditional threads and locks programming and how to overcome them through careful design and by working with the standard library. See how actors enable software running on geographically distributed computers to collaborate, handle failure, and create systems that stay up 24/7/365. Understand why shared mutable state is the enemy of robust concurrent code, and see how functional programming together with technologies such as Software Transactional Memory (STM) and automatic parallelism help you tame it.You'll learn about the untapped potential within every GPU and how GPGPU software can unleash it. You'll see how to use MapReduce to harness massive clusters to solve previously intractable problems, and how, in concert with Stream Processing, big data can be tamed. With an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the different models and hardware architectures, you'll be empowered to tackle any problem with confidence. What You Need:The example code can be compiled and executed on *nix, OS X, or Windows. From Publishers Weekly
Patrick the penguin awakens one morning to find he's inexplicably turned pink from head to foot. Boys can't be pink! he declares in all-capital letters. The doctor has no explanation (none is ever offered), but Patrick's dad points out that flamingos in Africa are pink and at least half are boys. Tired of being teased, Patrick swims to Africa and tries, unsuccessfully, to fit in with the friendly flamingos. Returning home, he is welcomed and respected for his adventure, and happily resigns himself to being forever pink: Being different wasn't so bad after all. Although Chamberlain's comical illustrations suit the exclamatory tone of the text, the book is loud and busy. Blurring a retro message about gender coding with a lesson about difference, the story fails to inspire sympathy for Patrick or offer solace to kids who might share Patrick's feelings. Design choices don't help; the erratic placement of text turns many pages into a jumble of words fighting for space with the images. Ages 4–8. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1—One day, Patrick the penguin wakes up pink. When his classmates make fun of him, he swims to Africa to meet the flamingos. But he doesn't fit in there either, so he heads home. His friends are impressed with his journey and happy to see him, prompting him to decide that his mom was right—being different is not so bad. This rehashing of the theme of accepting one's differences includes humor, but Patrick's classmates' turnaround is a bit facile, and nothing is truly new here. Charmberlain's bright cartoon illustrations are reminiscent of Mary Murphy's work, although somewhat more detailed. Patrick is, well, very pink, with his feet an impressive shade of fuchsia. While the text is set in a typeface that can be hard to decipher at times, the story reads aloud smoothly and reflects a childlike sensibility. However, some literal-minded youngsters may want a bit more explanation for why the penguin became pink and whether or not he will stay that way. For another take on accepting differences that includes flamingos, pick up a copy of Ellen Stoll Walsh's For Pete's Sake (Harcourt, 1998).—Amy Lilien-Harper, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT
Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist
Patrick, a young Antarctic penguin, discovers that his traditional color scheme has mysteriously changed overnight. Not even the doctor can figure out why he is suddenly pink. Tired ofbeing teased for his rosy hues at school,Patrick swims north to Africa to be with the flamingos. After all, he figures, pink is a normal color for boy birds there. But he’s not exactly one of the gang in that community either: he can’t fly or stand on one leg, the waterfeels too warm, and his beak is the wrong shape for flamingo food. Returning home, he finds that his dichromatic friends are fascinated by his adventure and immediately accept him back, resulting in the facile and inevitable conclusion that “Being different wasn’t so bad after all.”The plot and text are unrefined, and it’s uncertainwhether thisis trying to bea story about exotic birds, gender identity, self-acceptance, or all three. The art makes the strongest statement, with thick lines and distinct, bright, eye-catching colors.

Pink Perfection
By Steven R. McEvoy
This is a fantastic book about being different and being accepted. It is the story of Patrick the penguin who wakes up one day and has turned pink. He finds it hard being a pink penguin so goes in search of other pink birds, specifically flamingos in Africa, but he finds out he fits in even less there. So he returns home to Antarctica and discovers that being different is not so bad after all.

I was originally attracted by the hilarious cover of this book, and both the story and illustrations are wonderful. It is one of those fun books to read and look at. I think it would be fun to share with most children, and they will learn a lesson from it also. Pink! is an excellent read.

What an amazing story!

This story is absolutely wonderful and adorable! The illustrations are eye-catching, and the characters are very relatable! Thanks, Lynne Rickards, for creating such a touching story that my pink-loving little guy enjoys so much.

Its about penguins so we like it, but its not great
By Sarah G
My daughter LOVES penguins so we had to buy this, but its not our favorite.

The basic plot is that a boy penguin wakes up one day and finds he's pink. His friends make fun of him. So he runs away from home to join some flamingos, but realizes he doesn't fit in there either. So he goes home and gives a report at school talking about his trip (which apparently makes him the cool kid). Then everything is ok.

The basic message is that it is ok to be different. The story feels a little forced and could be more concise or maybe funnier (or both). The first time my husband and I read it to the kids we weren't impressed, but both kids seem to find it funny that the penguin is pink (they may be too young to really get the rest of the story).

this is an ok book if you're looking for something that talks about having it be ok to be different, but its not a great penguin book (the main character could easily be a duck or a chicken or a wombat instead). For penguin books, we like A Penguin Story a lot better.

Lone Classicist
By Larry J. Waggle
The Denniston text is an extremely useful resource that any classicist should have in front of them when working with primary source materials from ancient Greece. The organization of the book facilitates ease of use, and the entries are filled with examples taken from antiquity. Comparing the entries on particles in Denniston with those in Smyth greatly add another level of understanding to the project of translation.

informative, useful and in the best tradition of classical scholarship
By David Ferencz
Greek particles are among the most difficult aspects of ancient Greek to understand. What does "men" or "te" mean in a given context? Consider (in English) the difficulties of translating "well...," "so...," "OK...," or the implications of a compound like "well, ok, so..." in a specific context. For example, the meaning of "OK" is often not simply an affirmative. This volume offers excellent and comprehensive insights into the range meanings in given contexts for these little words that create often elusive nuance in the Greek language.

Like Marinone's "Tutti i Verbi Greci," this volume deserves a place on every classicist's bookshelf and is well worth the price.

What a gold-mine!
By Paul
A delightful gold-mine of information! This is not a book for the casual reader, and definitely not for the beginner at Greek. But for those already with some background in the language, Denniston provides a wealth of nuance about how the Greek particles are used. Those who are first studying Greek tear their hair out over keeping track of all the verb-forms. But once you get into actually reading the language, you find that verb-forms are not really the problem -- it's all those particles! Denniston explains them, and has himself a "way with words"; he describes the particles as providing "less body, more bouquet." This book seems as authoritative as Smyth's grammar, and that's saying a lot!

New Series
By Richard C. Hayes
Tasha was 13 years old and hiding in a forest, waiting for her father, when she is attacked by the largest wolf she had ever seen. As she laid there waiting to die she is picked up by 2 men and transported to the Facility, where she has been held for 8 years when;
Jack, an old vampire has allowed himself to be captured to gain entrance to the facility meets Tasha when she is brought to him for him to feed. He finds out that not only is she a telepath but also a werewolf, a fact she denies as she has never changed even though the people at the facility has been trying to make her do so. They develop a bond and when he hears her being tortured he orders his men to raid the facility and he rescues her and takes her to meet Sebastian, the head of the local werewolf pack.
The story goes on as they try to find out who and what she is, who ordered her attacked and why and are there others like her.
This book, if it had been longer and developed the characters better would had received 5 stars instead of 4 as it was interesting and gripping and made me want to know much more about each person and what was happening. Maybe in the next book of the series. We will have to wait and see.

NOTE: I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

3-1/2 Stars, Pretty decent fast read
By jcat
Which was mostly the problem, it was too short.

A longer story would have allowed more prior background and more character development. I'm not a big fan of novellas, I'd much rather sit down and read a full length book that satisfies me. That being said, it really wasn't bad as far as it went, and has an acceptable ending that will lead smoothly to the next installment.

Tasha is not a bad heroine if one takes into account her lack of worldly experience due to her incarceration. Jack the Vamp is the suitably sexy love interest, although Sebastian the Werewolf appears to be a fine future contender to round out a potential love triangle.

Spicy sex scenes, not for the young ones. Nothing really too unusual with the Telepath/Vampire/Werewolf scenario, but still nicely presented.

Quick and easy read.

Great Story! I wish it were longer.
By Amazon Customer
I loved the heroine. She was spunky and not afraid to speak her mind even if it caused her trouble. Jack could have used a little more description as could Sebastian for that matter. The book was left without a clear ending so I am assuming there will be more. I hope so. I would really like to read more about these characters and get a little more back story on them and on the organization that held them hostage. The author has a very good writing style. The story kept my interest until the end. A very pleasant surprise for a free book.

complete details and fabulous pictures of most steam locos
By A Customer
This is a very complete review of all the major types of steam locomotives in service, from 1880's through 1950's. The archival photos are clear and beautifully detailed, all in sharp black and white. The best feature is the alphabetical format for road names and types of locomotives, as well as interesting detail topics like water usage, superheating, and types of fireboxes.
The steam railroad fan will find lots of detail that will add to his knowledge of the type, period, or rail line of his interest. The model train buff will find a lot of information on detailing his models and layouts to look like the exact prototype. If you want to mix lines and engine types, this is a great source to use to make sure you are not far off the historical track. The photos and printing are so good, you will want to use a magnifier to see all the detail. It comes in a handy pocket size, and you can only improve on this book by increasing the size to better see the great photos.

A must have for Steam Locomotive Fans
By A Customer
This book is unbelieveable! It has history on the steam locomotives, the railroads who owned them, the manufactures, some of the major loco designers and the list goes on. My copy continues to get worn as I carry it to every Rail Museum I visit and carefully look up and read about each loco I look at. Don't visit any rail museum with out this guide!

Guide to North American Steam Locomotives is a must for RAIL FANS & Model Railroaders alike. A book like this does not come along often enough. It is an ideal size for taking to Rail Museums & traveling. I would like a larger version for model railroading for home, with larger photos.
The book is well written with so much information packed into it small size. The images are clear showing good detail.
I highly recommend this book. You really should have one! You will not be disappointed!
