Fantastic Text
By David Boles
I'll start off by saying that I've been developing code for 20+ years and am as comfortable rewriting machine code in memory to do arcane threaded kernel debugging as I am writing in high-level functional programming languages. However, Web app development is something I've never gained any facility with.

The tutorials and books I've looked at (obviously not an exhaustive search) are typically so imprecise that it is maddening to an experienced developer w/o a driving need to learn the stuff. The Web app development domain is also filled with lots of jargon for decades-old concepts and technologies, further hindering people from other development domains. Finally, many of these works are more about promoting some particular stack or toolchain (written in good faith!) than actual expository works on the subject itself.

Semmy has found an alternative path in this book. First, he has purposefully selected a solid and appropriate set of technologies. Second, he has defined a "micro-app" that, while very simple, possesses all of the key facets common to any Web application.

With regard to the first item, I take it as axiomatic that new Web app development will involve HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. However, if you stick with just those life is very hard. Right off the bat you're likely to end up making a real mess of client-side DOM manipulation. jQuery to the rescue! Is jQuery the only alternative? No, but it's a fine place to start. The reader will also want a server-side stack. Semmy makes a good choice (IMO) in giving us an easy virtual machine-based path here. That keeps us out of the swamp of trying to set up something ourselves when we just want to continue with the example and gives us just a tiny taste of deploying things in real public or private clouds. It also sticks with a low-enough level setup that what is actually happening when the different parts of the application are interacting is still clear.

I didn't expect a book called "Learning Web App Development" to teach me design - application design is it's rich own domain in which Web-specific issues are a small part. I also didn't expect the book to be a highly complete exposition on the subject, something I don't think is possible without either becoming so tied to a particular toolset that the book would be marginalized, or so enormous it becomes a "write only" tome.

If you're an experienced software developer but have never written anything for a browser other than some tiny Javascript apps, or last wrote stuff in the CGI days with HTML tables, this book will get you up to a point where you can both meaningfully communicate with Web developers and select/evaluate tools for whatever problem you are trying to solve. All in 10 to 40 hours depending on how many of the exercises you do - sweet.

If you're not an experienced developer at all, you'll have been taken through a meaningful Web micro-app in a pedagogically defensible manner. Count yourself lucky.

Towards A Pixel to Metal Perspective
By Puneet S. Lamba
[This is an excerpt of my review published in ACM ComputingReviews.com]

Becoming proficient at web application development involves a very steep learning curve and is often a never-ending, career-long endeavor. And yet a newbie has to start somewhere. When getting started, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the vast array of concepts, technologies, and tools one has to master.

Often, even proficient web application developers have blinders on when it comes to having a broad perspective on web application development. In general, most developers are adequately familiar with only one or two of the following aspects of web application development: client-side programming, middleware programming, server-side programming, text editors/integrated development environments (IDEs), source/version control systems, data stores, operating systems, network programming, and hardware configurations. Few developers have a broad enough perspective--or what I call a 360-degree “pixel to metal (P2M)” worldview--of web application development.

That’s why Semmy Purewal’s new book is a highly welcome and valuable contribution. Along similar lines, at the New England Java Users Group (NEJUG, Boston), in August 2013, I presented a technology stack and sample application with source code for end-to-end web application development. After my presentation, I had wished to write a book similar to this one. Alas, I had neither the time nor the energy to see it through. However, the stack I presented was a polyglot stack, including JavaScript for client-side development, Java for server-side development, and a relational database. Purewal’s book somewhat simplifies the learning curve, to the extent that’s possible, by choosing an entirely JavaScript-based stack.

At less than 300 pages, Purewal’s book may seem short, but it manages to introduce the reader to a surprisingly wide array of concepts, technologies, and tools. And in doing so, the author does a great job of spending just the right amount of time on each topic, gradually building on previously explained topics to construct increasingly sophisticated web application snippets in each successive chapter.

Here’s a listing of the concepts, technologies, and tools this book introduces: Sublime, Git, GitHub, Chrome, Linux, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), cascading style sheets (CSS), JavaScript, jQuery, JSON, Ajax, VirtualBox, Vagrant, Node.js, Express, PuTTY, hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), Redis, MongoDB, Mongoose, and Cloud Foundry. As a result, it is not only ideal for novices, but also helpful for experienced developers looking to plug gaps in their P2M perspective of web application development.

This is a very thoughtfully put together book. There are very few typographical errors or inconsistencies, which is difficult to achieve in a book on programming. Exercises at the end of each chapter stimulate the reader to take on additional challenges, and some of the exercise results are leveraged in future chapters (for example, finding the number of occurrences of a string in an array of strings). There are useful pointers to further reading at the end of each chapter. Most of the book’s code is available on GitHub, organized by chapter.

The author uses two major themes for most of the exercises and code examples. The first is a to-do list that the user can build, tag, and categorize by tags. The second is a poker hand evaluator that is used to demonstrate how best to leverage some of JavaScript’s built-in functions. Other smaller examples involve consuming JSON feeds from Yahoo, Flickr, and Twitter. I got some of the harder exercises working on my machine, and found the code examples to be accurate and helpful. The author follows a certain discipline for each project, including checking code into GitHub at regular intervals, which is good for developers to emulate.

Along the way, the author manages to impart useful information on programming best practices, especially with respect to JavaScript, which is central to the programming environment that this book is sculpted around.

A few words of caution. If you’re using the Internet Explorer browser (for example, because your employer only allows IE), you won’t get the full experience. IE’s JavaScript console is much inferior to that of Chrome. On IE 9, for example, I was not able to drill down into JavaScript objects in the way that Chrome permits. Also, many of the longstanding Node.js modules, for example, Express, have been broken up into their component modules, which have to be installed and linked separately. So, the code in the book isn’t going to work as is, but it will point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately, past chapter 6 (on Node.js) things start to get a bit light on details. On page 229, we connect to the Amazerrific data store in Mongo, but we never created the data store! Also, on GitHub, the code only goes up to chapter 6. So, at this crucial juncture, the reader is left to his or her own devices. We have a pretty decent to-dos app, but it has no ability to persist the to-dos. So, the next time you launch the app, all your to-dos are gone! (So, I took it upon myself to address the gaps--Google my GitHub to see a working demo with source code.)

Whereas the author champions RESTful application programming interfaces (APIs), working through a project as I did will surely cause you to realize the shortcomings of an approach that attempts to use HTTP methods to imply which CRUD operation is taking place. A fundamental gap is that the four HTTP methods don’t have uniform behavior. For example, an HTTP POST (meant to be used for updates) embeds parameters in the request body whereas an HTTP GET (meant to be used for gets or selects) places parameters on the uniform resource locator (URL). Apart from security and aesthetic considerations with placing parameters openly on the URL, it is unpleasant to not be able to work with uniform programming paradigms for these four HTTP methods either on the client side (jQuery doesn’t have a $.put() method) or on the server side (Express).

One area the author seems to omit completely is security. I don’t expect a book to be able to cover all topics, but the author does a great job of alluding to important concepts even when he isn’t planning to cover them in depth (for example, JavaScript Promise APIs). I believe readers ought to be given as complete a list of to-dos (pun intended!) required to make even a simple application production-ready. Furthermore, authentication and authorization are definitely must-haves.

Thorough, concise, and covers some key details
By Xuan Gao
The author has created a streamlined guide that covers all the critical areas one needs to get a solid footing in web development. The difficulty with starting out in web development is having a good resource that gets you from scratch to knowing enough to be able to ask the right questions and vet the quality of an answer, whether on StackOverflow or in the next book you read. Otherwise, one easily gets lost in the mountains of material out there, much of which is outdated or full of bad practices.

You should come in with beginner knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (Codecademy and Mozilla's online resources will have you covered). In just 300 terse pages, you will learn about subjects like tooling (Git, Sublime, and others), HTML, CSS, jQuery, JavaScript, JSON, Node, Express, MongoDB, Redis, and deployment to Cloud Foundry. But this is not just another copy-and-paste tutorial. Although the coverage obviously can't be exhaustive, Semmy does a great job to create a clear narrative of how these parts work together to build a web application. The code is mostly free of errors, which is critical for beginners, and errata are online at learningwebappdev.com and GitHub (semmypurewal/learningwebappdev). There are also strokes of professional insight, such as an explanation on why you should keep your JavaScript at the bottom of your HTML and a clear example on refactoring jQuery. Details like this are usually not found in beginner books or they are just stated as gospel.

One of Semmy's explicit goals is to prepare readers for real self-study of Michael Hartl's Rails tutorial (which means understanding all the details packed into that guide, which are often lost on newbies). I believe this is accomplished. After reading this book, one will have the foundation needed to understand intermediate material on the myriad frameworks out there. So pick this up and get started on learning web app development!

Priests of My People: Levitical Paradigms for Early Christian Ministers (Patristic Studies), by Bryan A. Stewart

This book offers an innovative examination of the question: why did early Christians begin calling their ministerial leaders priests (using the terms hiereus/sacerdos)? Scholarly consensus has typically suggested that a Christian priesthood emerged either from an imitation of pagan priesthood or in connection with seeing the Eucharist as a sacrifice over which a priest must preside. This work challenges these claims by exploring texts of the third and fourth century where Christian bishops and ministers are first designated priests: Tertullian and Cyprian of Carthage, Origen of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, and the church orders Apostolic Tradition and Didascalia Apostolorum. Such an examination demonstrates that the rise of a Christian ministerial priesthood grew more broadly out of a developing religio-political ecclesiology. As early Christians began to understand themselves culturally as a unique polis in their own right in the Greco-Roman world, they also saw themselves theologically and historically connected with ancient biblical Israel. This religio-political ecclesiology, sharpened by an emerging Christian material culture and a growing sense of Christian sacred space, influenced the way Christians interpreted the Jewish Scriptures typologically. In seeing the nation of Israel as a divine nation corresponding to themselves, Christians began appropriating the Levitical priesthood as a figure or type of the Christian ministerial office. Such a study helpfully broadens our understanding of the emergence of a Christian priesthood beyond pagan imitation or narrow focus on the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, and instead offers a more comprehensive explanation in connection with early Christian ecclesiology.

-<I>Priests of My People</I> is a fresh contribution to our understanding of the historical development of the 'priesthood.' Bryan A. Stewart shows that the Christian bishop was not, as is commonly held, called priest because he presided at the sacrifice of the Eucharist. As Stewart makes clear, the newly developed typological connections with the Levitical priesthood accord with the trajectory of the New Testament and the Apostolic Fathers, in a manner that prior scholars overlooked. The Complete Beer Course: Boot Camp for Beer Geeks: From Novice to Expert in Twelve Tasting Classes, by Joshua M. Bernstein

It's a great time to be a beer drinker, but also the most confusing, thanks to the dizzying array of available draft beers. Expert Joshua M. Bernstein comes to the rescue with The Complete Beer Course, demystifying brews and breaking down the elements that make beer's flavor spin into distinctively different and delicious directions. Structured around a series of easy-to-follow classes, his course hops from lagers and pilsners to hazy wheat beers, Belgian-style abbey and Trappist ales, aromatic pale ales and bitter IPAs, roasty stouts, barrel-aged brews, belly-warming barley wines, and mouth-puckering sour ales. There is even a class on international beer styles and another on pairing beer with food and starting your own beer cellar. Through suggested, targeted tastings, you'll learn when to drink down-and when to dump those beers down a drain.

Review
"Bernstein has written a book that will take the reader from 'beer novice' to 'intrepid and informed explorer' in no time flat."--Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery brewmasterand editor-in-chief ofThe Oxford Companion to Beer"The Complete Beer Coursebelongs in the library of every beer lover, home brewer and professional brewer."--Jim Koch, founder, the Boston Beer Company"Figuring out which beers you want to spend the most time with just got easier with Bernstein's romp through beer history, styles and thirst-provoking stories."--Charlie Papazian, author ofThe Complete Joy of Homebrewing

"It might be the best craft-beer book of 2013. But it is also, more important, both the product of a beer-centric age and a solution to its challenges—and, if we're lucky, an indication that beer writing is evolving to suit the needs of a broader audience." —Washington Post". . . covers a variety of beer-related topics, including a nice breakdown on specific hops, terms glossary, a list of brew weeks by state and more.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer"Structured as a 12-part course spanning the world of beers, this tome is terrifically comprehensive. Brooklyn-based beer expert and journalist Bernstein (brewed awakening: behind the beers and brewers leading the world's craft brewing revolution) shares his immense appreciation for a remarkable variety of beers. The result is appealingly chatty writing that, while definitely reading as a progression through what the author calls a 'boot camp,' is also encyclopedic in nature. Readers may be familiar with common styles such as ales and lagers but are likely to emerge keen to seek out less well-known tipples such as milk stout or gose (a salty, German style). The chapters are balanced between a focus on more typical representations of styles and niche varieties, and Bernstein suggests many favorites for the reader to taste while reading. Spotlights on particular breweries and beers and lavish illustrations make this book as enjoyable to flip through randomly as to read from start to finish. Verdict a wide-ranging volume that is sure to appeal to beer enthusiasts and casual consumers alike. Highly recommended for public libraries and collections with a focus on food and beverages." —Library Journal (STARRED REVIEW)

From the Inside Flap
Go on a fun, flavorful tour through the world of craft brews with one of the most unique and fascinating voices in beer today. In this thoroughly up-to-date, comprehensive, and utterly witty beer course (the only one currently available in print), Joshua M. Bernstein demystifies beer by "elementally breaking down the grains, yeast, hops, and techniques that cause beer's flavor to spin into thousands of distinctively delicious directions."
Not only has the work of Bernstein, a highly acclaimed beer expert, appeared in publications such as theNew York TimesandImbibe, but he also leads a New York City tour of homebrewers' apartments and lofts as well as lectures around America. Now he has created this complete course for anyone who wants to choose from and enjoy the vast array of singular brews available today.
After giving you the tools to taste, smell, and evaluate beers, Bernstein takes you through a series of easy-to-understand classes that will have you hopping from lagers and pilsners to hazy wheat beers, Belgian-style abbey and Trappist ales, aromatic pale ales and bitter IPAs, roasty stouts, barrel-aged brews, belly-warming barley wines, and mouth-puckering sour ales. A sequence of suggested, targeted tastings will help you distinguish appropriate flavors and those that "signify that you should dump those beers down a drain." Features on the world's most visionary breweries, a glossary of terms, a chapter on pairing beer with food and starting your own beer cellar, an informative chart on hops, and a calendar of craft beer weeks complete the course.
"Years of experience and sampling have given me the confidence to pass on certain beers, and seek out others as rabidly as my dog does a chicken bone,"writes Bernstein. "The key is being armed with the necessary knowledge. That means learning the ropes, loosening your lips, and trying one beer after another, and another. Something tells me you'll like takingThe Complete Beer Course, where earning extra credit has never been so much fun."

Engaging and informative. My new favorite beer book.
By Dana E. Bernstein
I read Joshua's other book, Brewed Awakening, and so Amazon recently recommended this book to me. This is a hefty hardcover and the magazine-style layout is eye-catching -- there's a mix of candid photos, behind-the-scenes peeks, and product images, which are really well done. His writing style is casual yet informative, as if you were chatting with a beer-savvy friend.

The book is essentially laid out in classes, which explore different styles of beers such as lagers, wheat beers, Belgians, IPAs, and sours. The chapters examine the brewing aspects for each beer style, historical background, sub-classes of beer, and facts, facts, facts. I love history, so it's nice to get a thorough explanation of the origins of the Bavarian Purity Law and also of obscure beer styles. There are tasting recommendations for each sub-class of beer. However, living in the Midwest, a lot of the particular beers listed are not available to me here. The author was kind enough to provide alternate recommendations for just that reason.

The final chapter goes into cellaring beer and pairing beer with food (before this, my alcohol-pairing knowledge was pretty much limited to pairing white wine with fish and IPAs with spicy dishes). There are some solid guidelines to follow here, and I'm excited to try some out with friends. As with his previous book, this intriguing tome will help guide me in my travels, so that I'll know where to go and what to try. I can't wait to check out some of the gastropubs he mentions!

I am definitely happy with this book and it will be on my coffee table for the foreseeable future.

like sitting with a beer-savvy friend at the bar
By lucybeercook
Imagine going out with a friend who knows a lot - really quite a lot - about beer and sitting at the bar becomes this great, long conversation about beer and how it is made, and how each style obtains characteristic flavors. This conversation makes you thirsty for more and amazingly, there's a book to read that sounds just like your beer-savvy friend. We all have that friend in Josh Bernstein, who conducts home-brew hours and tastings all around NYC. Though I live far away, in Milwaukee, WI, I really enjoyed the guided tour from Josh, in print. What a treat! Well worth sharing with all your beer-loving friends.

Ahha!
By Animelover17
I had to buy all seasons of yugioh, I already put in orders for season three through 5, otherwise like before, they will be gone! don't want to suffer a withdrawal from it. As I said before on review on season one, I have been looking for yugioh with subtitles or captions via online or anywhere, cant find them that are working, I mean with captions... so pissed me off...took me ten years since.... and when heard about this seasons of yugioh came out, I was like yay! decided to buy all of them.

no point to tell you what going on this seasons, after all there are bunch of reviews already explained. But all I can say... it has captions... need to set television to bring out captions. but It is all great. box look awesome.. It is cheaper to buy a volume case but... box set are way better, more cost but... get a cool box case, like having a book on shelves.

Battle City begins as the story continues.
By Garrett Boudreaux
Continuing off from season 1, season 2 opens with a new arc, the battle city arc which is by far the most iconic arc of the show's history, we are introduced to new characters, new cards, and a new format of dueling, as a tournament to decide who's the best turns into a constant battle for survival for Yugi, and a huge test for Joey who no longer has his main card to use in duels. Both soon have to combine their power to fight off a new evil, and with everything on the line the battles are intense for sure, if you like this show you should definitely pick up this arc.

This is Yu-Gi-Oh at its best!
By James Braithwaite
As a kid I used to love waiting for Saturday mornings to catch the newest episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! This season was by far my favorite. The story is more interesting this time around. It has some of the best duels in the series. The new addition to cards and stratagies makes for a very fun season to watch. If you loved season one than you will want this one too.
