Chapters describe stalking tigers in India and jaguars in Brazil’s Pantanal swamps, studying mountain gorillas in Central Africa and predator-prey relations in the Serengeti, tracking newfound species on the wild border of Vietnam and Laos, searching for snow leopards in the Hindu Kush, and Schaller’s groundbreaking work with giant pandas in Sichuan. Later accounts broaden the focus from individual creatures to whole ecosystems. “The careless rapture of my early studies has been replaced more and more by efforts to protect animals and their habitats,” he writes.

Wildlife Conservation Society vice president Schaller (The Last Panda) presents 19 short pieces culled from the dozens of articles and books he has published during half a century spent observing animals around the world. The selections include studies of the daily lives of such exotic beasts as jaguars in Brazil; tigers in central India; lions, wildebeest and cheetahs in Tanzania's Serengeti Plain; giant pandas in China; snow leopards in Pakistan; and chiru (antelope) in the uplands of the Tibetan Plateau. Entwined with his descriptions of the animals are vivid pictures of his own life in the field—treks to remote places, camps established in tents and huts, hours perched in trees and other uncomfortable posts. Vintage Schaller!

A fantastic book. It takes us on a world tour (The Americas, Africa and Asia) to introduce us to the marvelous wildlife that this field biologist extraordinaire has worked on for the past fifty or more years. It collects articles written over the years in one handy volume. Passionately argued and brilliantly written, highly recommended!

This is a real field diary of one of the few naturalists alive who continues to walk among beasts! Dr. George Schaller transport the readers to his journeys and research in all the corners in this planet.
It's breathtaking, entertaining, and overall inspiring not only biologists or nature lovers. This book shows how is possible to life an explendid life exploring and protecting wildlife throughout the world.

I didn't find this useful at all. If you're starting from scratch and you don't know how to read music, I don't think this would help you, it didn't help me. It doesn't translate what the musical notes mean to position on the frets

Great for Suzuki Violinists

This book is perfectly designed for the Suzuki lesson structure. If there is an able teacher and parent present to introduce and teach each lesson, the book is very successful. My students are exposed to the basic concepts of music theory in a theory class following their weekly group classes - so there is no need to explain basic concepts like the "treble clef" or "staff." There are plenty of introductory reading books out there for the older beginner, but this book has a gradual yet not monotonous pace, catering to an early beginner who has a support structure (parent/teacher).
I use this book for all of my students in a studio of 40+ Suzuki Violinists!

About the Author

Harold C. Lyon, Jr. is a graduate of West Point, former US Director of Education for the Gifted, project offi cer for the development of Sesame Street, assistant to the president of Ohio University, has served on the faculties of Georgetown, Antioch, Dartmouth Medical School, Notre Dame College, Universities of Massachusetts, and Munich where he currently teaches physicians to be more effective teachers. He received the Gold Medal in the 32nd International Film & TV Festival of New York, a CINDY Award, and the Blue Ribbon in the American Film & Video Festival.

Reinhard Tausch is Professor Emeritus at the University of Hamburg and is the author of numerous popular books on psychology and teaching.

The Late Carl R. Rogers (1902–1987) has been called ‘the most infl uential psychologist in American history’. His infl uence in the fi elds of education, counseling, psychotherapy, confl ict resolution, and peace is similarly outstanding. The founder of humanistic psychology, he authored 16 books and more than 200 professional articles.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE, LOVINGLY AND SKILLFULLY PRESENTED

One of the hardest things to do is to make the obvious interesting. It should be obvious by now that treating people as self-creating and creative human beings is probably a good idea. Yet when you examine how America goes about educating children, you have to stop and wonder. Are these children we are ordering into rows, sitting at their desks? Children are alive! That's a good thing! Even teachers are alive. That's a good thing, too. But look at America's schools and you wonder whether anyone knows this. Children and their teachers are cooped up together in test-driven curricula. I talked with a man who quit his job as a high school English teacher for 25 years, in one of the "best school systems in the country" (Montgomery County, MD) because he said it had all turned into "scripted learning." He had little authority, despite his experience, in deviating from the script. It was like reading the news, then turning kids over to the testing regimen.

Hal Lyon, an old friend and a passionate advocate of learning, children, and the opportunity to teach children and to learn from them, has assembled a book worthy of the subject and of his passion for it. He cares about kids and his mentor, psychologist Carl Rogers, advanced American psychotherapy by providing "unconditional positive regard" for the people who came to him for help. Rogers helped them by helping them to understand that they were worthy of his or anyone's positive regard—and especially, their own.

Rogers and Lyon knew each other during a tumultuous period in American psychology and education, and their conversations about this introduce several chapters in this book. Lyon has done a lot of work in Germany during the past 20 years and has continued to spread the word and collect the works of other psychologists and educators whom Rogers influenced. The result is a compendium of useful history and information about why we truly need to remember the obvious: that we are human, that children are human, and that the process of education ought to honor that fundamental fact.

This is clearly a labor of love on Dr. Lyon's part and his book is the better for it. He has done real work here, gathering and sorting the research and its findings that demonstrated, unmistakably, that whether we are talking about teaching medical students or kindergartners, treating them like aware human beings capable of creative, non-linear learning is a lot more effective than just treating them as dumpster for data—then testing the dumpster to see if it remembers what was dumped into it.

Written in a calm, lucid, warm-hearted but not soft-headed way, Lyons' book tells a story that needs telling. As a social history of education over the last quarter-century, this is a valuable book. Its message, however, is invaluable. And, sadly, it seems that this message needs to be told again, despite the best efforts, scrupulous research and loving appreciation that Hal Lyon has provided.

Anyone interested in these matters would be well served by picking up this book and opening it. I went through it in one sitting. It's not a thriller, but it tells an important story that still needs to be told, read and understood.

Review of ‘On Becoming An Effective Teacher’

By Harold C. Lyon, Jr, with Carl R. Rogers and Reinhard Tausch,
(his two famous co-authors died before this book was published).

This book is based on the people/person-centered concept of learning, of teaching.

Initially the reviewer thought that the book, although well written, was for a small, select audience.

Boy, was he ever wrong.

Everyone is a teacher, good or bad, and we start learning literally at birth – the author(s) give as a example the Leboyer method, which in part leaves the umbilical cord attached for a time after birth, then places the newborn in warm water to simulate the environment of the womb the baby just left – and continues on a different track throughout life.

An example was given involving some residents of a community of nursing homes in California who were bedridden. They received a regimen of massage therapy and after a period of time were up and walking around.

Some parts of the book discuss a ‘new man’ arising theory, and while the reviewer agrees with some of his described ‘traits’, on the whole they appear to be nihilistic.

Also there are several sections – most of the book in fact – that treat the ‘teaching’ of ‘students’ literally from birth onward. Excellent, yet no space or thought apparently has been given to mundane but necessarily practical subject of who does the teaching – one of the parents presumably? This then is a full time job, which is exemplary, but it also leads to, poses another question, that of money – where does it come from, in the family of today, where both parents must work ‘outside of the home’, in most cases?
Surely it is not the babysitter, the ‘surrogate parent’?

The reviewer is leaving out the fact that all good teachers from k-12 through medical school and beyond must have the three person-centered traits – empathy, caring, and genuineness – which are hallmarks of really effective teachers. The reviewer is of the opinion that empathy is most important, that the student is a feeling individual, much more than a mere ‘matriculation number’.

There is nothing in the book that is not a good idea, a great way to teach, to learn. The author even discounts the teachers unions as being more for the protection of their members than the advancement of students – great!

A book on teaching, on or about being an effective teacher would not be complete without a section on leadership, and the author is after all a graduate of the premier school in the world for teaching leadership, the United States Military Academy at West Point.

There is also a section on mentoring, continuing education if you will, an invaluable degree of help for the young executive, the military officer who needs a bit more guidance as he/she progresses up the ladder.

The author references Abraham Maslow, of ‘hierarchy of needs’ fame, and then goes into a discussion of ‘Theory X and Theory Y’ styles of Management, of Leadership, with solid, down to earth examples.

About the author:
He began writing early, while a cadet as military editor of the West Point periodical, The Pointer. He published often in his short 7-year Army career in Infantry and Army Magazines with titles like: Cancer Action, Recondo!, The Courage of your Convictions, The Old One-Two (with Gen. Jack Galvin), Man Against Tank, and Invisible Infiltrators. He's the author of 7 books and over 150 articles on eclectic subjects including military strategy, leadership, education, multimedia, psychology, research, hunting, and fishing. After Ranger training and a tour helping Gen. Westmoreland establish the Recondo School, Lyon commanded a rifle company in the 501st for a year – described in the book as his "favorite job ever,” a year in Korea when he authored a counter-guerrilla concept ("Cancer Action") which resulted in his briefing Bobby Kennedy and Gen. Maxwell Taylor, Aide to the CG of the 2nd Infantry Division where he and his CG were fired upon while integrating James Meredith into Ol’ Miss. The book relates the interesting story of how Gov. Wallace met secretly with Gen. Billingslea, Ramsey Clark, and Lyon and offered a deal: if the military agreed to carry Wallace off the steps of the University of Alabama before network TV, that" there’d be no blood shed" and the integration could take place. They called Bobby Kennedy who got President Kennedy on the phone who told them, “Take that deal!”

After Lyon left the military his career continued to be unique as assistant to the president of Ohio University, a political appointment in the Johnson Administration where he relates in the book about using person-centered management within the bureaucracy, project officer for Sesame Street, professorships at Georgetown, Antioch, Dartmouth Medical School, a Fulbright professorship at the University of Munich where he currently teaches physicians to be more effective teachers. He received the Gold Medal in the 32nd International Film & TV Festival of New York, a CINDY Award, the Blue Ribbon in the American Film & Video Festival. His book, Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit (deepwaterspress.com) won the New England Outdoor Writers Association "Best Book of the Year Award" and the Silver Medal in the National eLite Book Awards.

The tittle of my review just about says what there is to say. The more I learn about the life and writings of Hal Lyon the more I am convinced that he is one of the unsung heroes of our time. The book is both illuminating and charming, much likes its authors.

Historicism

Hamilton's book advertizes itself as an accomplishment in finally clarifying for us the confusing and controversial notion of "historicism." It provides a good survey of the key figures and philosophical commitments in the history of historicism and attempts to deal with the stakes involved in contemporary investments of the concept. But Hamilton's text turns out to be, at best, a kind of apologia and, at worst, a "how-to." Consequently, his assessment--and understanding, I'm affraid--of historicism is delivered from the position of a believer and advocate. This contributes to the reproduction of a lot of conventional mantras about historicism, such as, for example, that it somehow represented--and still does--an "anti-modernist" position. We are still modernist, in a sense, and this is why, as this book demonstrates, it is difficult to think outside the framework of historicism. A provocative book, but not deserving of its authoritative title.

From Preface

For quantitative researchers working in an investment bank, the process of writing a fixed income model usually has two stages. First, a theoretical framework for yield curve dynamics is specified, using the language of mathematics (especially stochastic calculus) to ensure that the underlying model is well-specified and internally consistent. Second, in order to use the model in practice, the equations arising from the first step need to be turned into a working implementation on a computer. While specification of the theoretical model may be seen as the difficult part, in quantitative finance applications the second step is technically and intellectually often more challenging than the first. In the implementation phase, not only does one need to translate abstract ideas into computer code, one also needs to ensure that the resulting numbers being produced are meaningful to a trading desk, are stable and robust, are in line with market observations, and are produced in a timely manner. Many of these requirements are, as it turns out, extremely challenging, and not only demand a strong knowledge of actual market practices (which tend to deviate in significant ways from ``textbook'' theory), but also require application of a large arsenal of techniques from applied mathematics, chiefly approximation methods and numerical techniques. While there are many good introductory books on fixed income derivatives on the market, when we hire people who have read them we find that they still require significant training before they become productive members of our quantitative research teams. For one, while existing literature covers some aspects of the first step above, advanced approaches to specifying yield curve dynamics are typically not covered in sufficient detail. More importantly, there is simply too little said in the literature about the process of getting the theory to work in the real world of trading and risk management. An important goal of our book series is to close these gaps in the literature.

The three volumes of Interest Rate Modeling are aimed primarily at practitioners working in the area of interest rate derivatives, but much of the material is quite general and, we believe, will also hold significant appeal to researchers working in other asset classes. Students and academics interested in financial engineering and applied work will find the material particularly useful for its description of real-life model usage and for its expansive discussion of model calibration, approximation theory, and numerical methods. In preparing the books we have drawn on nearly 30 years of combined industry experience, and much of the material has never been exposed in book form before.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to our families for their support and patience, even when our initial plans for a brief book on tips and tricks for working quants ballooned into something more ambitious that consumed many evenings and weekends over the last six years.

I have read the vol 1 and vol 3. This review is for vol 3 only. After reading vol 1 (pls refer to my review for Vol 1) I was very impressed with the theoretical coverage and numerical tips, given by the authors who are probably the best quants on the street. Having this in mind I was expecting the same excitement and detail coverage for a wide range of vol products in vol 3. Now I have briefly finished reading vol 3, I have to say my feeling of vol 3 is mixed. I love the theortical treatment very well, the mapping in chap 16, the spread options in chap 17, the different improvements of regression in chap 18, the bermudans in 19, etc. The good thing is the subject is talked in detail with proofs and some implementation tips, and it is hard to find such material in other quant books. However, I feel something is missing. Some real trade examples maybe would fill some blanks. Just how to vega hedge a perticular CLE in real life, for example? I know there is no simple answer but would love to see how the big banks are doing it. I was expecting the authors discuss the hedging strategy for various type of vol products, 1 by 1, in detail, but I was a bit disappointed. Another pity I feel is the lack of discussion of forward vol and certain 2nd-order derivative profiles for the callables. Such as negative volga for accretor callables, I think every vol trader on the street knows this is ugly, however the authors didn't talk about it. Maybe the focus of this book is mainly about pricing models but not hedging/managing a vol book. Well, there are really too many things to cover I guess so can't expect a perfect book. Overall I would still highly recommend this book for quants and vol traders.

The book is accessible to both practitioners of mathematical finance as well as researchers in the field.

Written with an exceptional commitment to clarity (a well familiar style for the authors) the book reaches well beyond the Interest Rates modeling into the realm of applied mathematical finance for today financial engineering.

The book covers an extremely large spectrum of topics, ranging from simple to very advance: from PDE and MC to path-wise differentiations and payoff smoothing, from basic stochastic calculus and copula theory to Longstaff-Schwartz and Markovian projection, from local volatility to QGM and LMM, from vanilla products to callable exotics, from PV calculation techniques to hedging strategies and risk management, etc.

Many of the technical solutions presented in this book can easily be applied to other mathematical finance fields (Equity, FX, Commodity, etc.).

In my opinion this is the best book of the year in mathematical finance and with certainty it is one of the great literature resources in the field, a "must have" for any quant.

Although Amazon sales separately each volume (it may be handy when you need to replace one of the volumes that you had lent to a good friend) the book has a strong cohesion and I think it is meant to be study as one unit. I strongly encourage you to consider buying all tree volumes Interest Rate Modeling. Volume 1: Foundations and Vanilla Models, Interest Rate Modeling. Volume 2: Term Structure Models, Interest Rate Modeling. Volume 3: Products and Risk Management.

The best practical guide on interest rates derivatives modeling

I really find "Interest Rate Modeling" by Leif Andersen and Vladimir Piterbarg not only the best practical guide on interest rates derivatives modeling but also one of the best books on quantitative finance, in general. It is no wonder that many quants supporting asset classes other than interest rates derivatives bought this book as well. It is not only rigorous to ensure good understanding and giving the big picture but also very practical showing what would work in practice and what not, and how (using what tools) it can be achieved. Other books sometimes go on describing in details models that no one would ever use in practice just for the sake of completeness, or never discuss implementation details, which are the most important if the model is to be applied in practice (not mentioning curves building, Greeks and Risk Management). I am sure that every trading desk has already got a few copies of this book for reference: before it was a sharp need for a comprehensive interest rate derivatives book in practice like that. It is comprehensive because it methodologically covers all the components for successful understanding, development, and application of interest rates modeling in practice: mathematical and financial background (with tractable proofs and very useful references), the detailed description of traded interest rate derivatives, various practically applicable models (from basic to the most sophisticated) and numerical methods in a very systematic and consistent approach. I really recommend this book to everyone interested in quantitative finance: equally to academics (including students in financial engineering, mathematical finance etc) and practitioners.

Because he got more involved in computers, he made the change to IT in 1996. a must have for weblogic newbie

This is a great book when you are new to weblogic and you need to administrator some weblogic environments (also good for developers to know the weblogic basics ). This book starts simple and talks about an administrator of a company. He talk about the steps and choices of that WebLogic Administrator needed to make. This book does not covers Fusion Middleware products configuration or HA which runs on this Weblogic env.
If you already know weblogic and got some running environments then you can probably skip this book.

For weblogic developers topics and advanced weblogic administration I would recommend this book Professional Oracle WebLogic Server (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)

Didn't find this as informative as I hoped. Rather confusing and the worked examples felt incomplete leaving more questions than answers. Also have the Oracle authored book which I haven't yet read but hope its more fluid and informative.

Im Vordergrund steht dabei nicht allein die begriffliche Auseinandersetzung, sondern zugleich die kritische Durchleuchtung der Frage, in welchem Kontext die beiden Begriffe zueinander stehen.
Die konkrete Fragestellung lautet demnach: Worin liegt der genaue Unterschied zwischen diesen beiden Begriffen bzw. weshalb sind sie nicht synonym verwendbar?
Sowohl ‚Kompetenz’ als auch ‚Qualifikation’ sind moderne Begriffe, die seit den 80er Jahren in der Diskussion stehen, wobei ebenso debattiert wird, ob sie den bisherigen Bildungsbegriff wom�glich ersetzen k�nnen (vgl. Wilsdorf 1991, S. 38).
Dabei befinden sich speziell zwei Begriffe im Blickfeld, die sich im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt haben: die ‚Schl�sselqualifikationen’ und die ‚berufliche Handlungskompetenz’ im so genannten ‚handlungsorientierten Unterricht’. Der Vollst�ndigkeit halber werden sie er�rtert, doch eine detaillierte Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Themenkomplex w�rde das Ausma� dieser Seminararbeit sprengen.
