Excellent mid-sized Medicine text

Excellent mid-sized Medicine text. Besides Kumar and Clark's (another British text), there do not appear to be any texts of this size for medical students in their clinical years, after Stobo's The Principles and Practice of Medicine was discontinued. I found Andreoli and Carpenter's Cecils Essentials of Medicine (7th edition) to be too simplified at times (seemed to be more relevant for 2nd year students rather than those on rotations) as well as full of errors. Harrison's is at times too long and dense for students to absorb while on their rotations, as are specialty-specific texts. Although written for British medical students, the practice of medicine is largely the same in the United States, and despite the differences in spelling of some words, Davidson's is extremely readable as well as being concise.

About the Author

Steve Gruenert is a professor at Indiana State University. He has studied organizational culture and climate for more than 20 years and continues to learn and collaborate with other researchers as these concepts evolve. Steve is the coauthor of School Culture Rewired: How to Define, Assess, and Transform It and Minds Unleashed: How Principals Can Lead the Right-Brained Way. He and his wife have three daughters, Jennifer, Mackenzi, and Madison. His wife Emily also works at Indiana State University as a student advisor.

Todd Whitaker has been fortunate to be able to blend his passion with his profession. He is a leading presenter in the field of education. Todd is a professor of educational leadership at the University of Missouri and professor emeritus at Indiana State University. He has worked as teacher and a principal and is the author or coauthor of more than 40 books, including School Culture Rewired, What Great Teachers Do Differently, Your First Year, and Shifting the Monkey. Todd and his wife Beth have three children: Katherine, Madeline, and Harrison.

I'm sure my questions about bitcoin are not unusual, so I was looking forward to having the whole concept explained in understandable terms. It's possible that that's what happened here, but to be honest, I didn't stick around to find out. Every time Geissinger began to address an aspect of bitcoin, he'd take us on a lengthy diversion into American libertarianism, the history of mortgage defaults, or some other topic. I'd lose interest and skim through to see how that affected the development of bitcoin, but eventually gave up. If you want a fairly concise and unbiased (Geissinger is a big fan of bitcoin so has trouble explaining the risks without dismissing them out of hand), John Lanchester has a great article in April 21, 2016 London Review of Books, titled When Bitcoin Grows Up. Explains the history, the risks and benefits, how it's used, and where it might go from here.

Stranger than fiction

My reaction when I started reading news articles about "bitcoin": wait, can they DO that?

I've been bemused ever since, and then when the collapse suddenly happened, we all started to read about some elusive Japanese dude named Satoshi Nakamoto, possibly a fictional person or at least a nom de guerre. The story took on a surreal aspect. Even if you were a genius novelist like Tom Clancy, you couldn't come up with this stuff--Nakamoto, the reclusive (fictional?) genius who invented true electronic currency Bitcoin; Dread Pirate Roberts, drugs, hackers, drugs, counterfeiters, MURDERS, and a guy who acted all na�ve innocent but ended up with a massive jail sentence for providing Silk Road.

This book proves, life is STRANGER than FICTION.

Another great addition to the series. This time a relatively new character betrayed the club in an effort to save his woman. That's risking death or expulsion. Unless the club comes up with another option. The author took a relatively new couple and made is care about them. I like that. I'm very excited to see what she is doing with Rook and Pierce.

Pierce's storyline is the biggest surprise in this series so far. And Rook? God I love an alpha sadist!!!

Well what can I say apart from Go TEAM TUCK!!! This story has had me waiting with baited breathe, will Tuck fall, will he deny his feelings for Jana, will it take him over half of the book to know what we all know that he belongs with Jana and Braden! It has had my nerves on edge I tell you! I am so pleased that we finally got to see Tuck with all his scruff, bearded inked up and muscular, man bun glory fall for the beautiful Jana. And when we say fall it is as in majorly fall ... like a tree .... you can hear the word TIMBER! being echoed around the clubhouse because this sexy, badass biker has finally realised what we all knew that his heart belongs to Jana, fully, totally, irrevocably. It was so beautiful to read, well not at first as their was some major trouble a foot when Jana was taken by her psycho ex, and then held captive and tortured so not exactly a disney moment ad everyone was worried as no body knew a thing ... which led Tuck to making a bit of a bad choice however, the joy of that downfall was seeing him go all dirty Harry on the Bad Guys I was so excited I cheered aloud! Then the man did a complete 180! After the situation was handled and his gun holstered and the club knew what was happening and where everybody stood once the dust settled, the difference in him as he took care of Jana, the tenderness, the compassion and also the passion and love making a.k.a. CLAIMING! between the two nearly set my kindle on fire it was so intense, and passionate and Hot and when I say hot I mean Scorching! Factor 50 sun screen is advised to be worn just to read it! I absolutely loved it and thought it was definitely worth the wait. Yet again this amazingly talented author has delivered and exceeded all expectations and also left us yet again with baited breath as we wait for the next instalment in this amazing series. This is definitely an author you should have on your automatic read list, she never fails to impress me. I really hope you enjoy this book as much as I did and I most certainly did! A knight in shining armor coming to the rescue on his white stallion. That’s the fairy tale all little girls are told and dream about. What they don’t tell you is sometimes the damsel has to help herself a little and that all knights don’t look alike. Some ride in on a motorcycle and wear leather. Jana, a single mother hiding out from her psychotic ex William, seeks the help of her friend Bobbie. Bobbie gets her a job and a place to stay in a biker clubhouse. Jana does what she needs to do, she keeps her head down and takes care of her son. Finding a man is not on the menu. He was there, watching her. She could feel him. Looking up she saw him. Tuck. The man that intrigued her but she shouldn’t want. She has enough trouble, adding a man into it didn’t work for her. He found her. Somehow her ex William found her so it’s time to run. Packing her things she prepares to pick up her son and leave. On her way out of the clubhouse she sees a glint of light then it all went black. Waking up in pain and hearing William’s voice she figures it’s all over. She will not give up her son’s location or Bobbie’s name no matter what. Just when she thinks it’s all over she hears him. The one man she wants, needs but never thought she would see again, Tuck. He rescues her and that will change both their lives. This is a must read. What will follow will rock the club.

Great New Book!

Very interesting book with an exceptionally versatile stitch! The projects included are straight-forward and well diagrammed, the project supply lists are comprehensive, and the colourways offered are compelling. This is a great selection for your beading friends who want to try something besides the peyote, RAW, and herringbone staples but still enjoy structural creations, and a nice treat for yourself if you're looking to learn a new beadweaving skill that offers a lot of modification potential relatively quickly. I highly recommend it for intermediate beadweavers with a few years experience, but a beginner could master this stitch with some patience--the instructions are VERY clear.

The lively and delightful Albion Stitch, every which way but loose

This gorgeous teaching book puts Albion stitch front and center. As Marcia DeCoster says in her foreword, "...I love a book that gives us a comprehensive set of skills within one beadweaving stitch. Heather has done that here, building upon the readers understanding of the stitch one chapter at a time." Heather Kingsley-Heath further explains in her introduction that Albion stitch began "during a conversation between bead artist friends about how to bring fresh ideas into our beadwork."
Heather explains her process from the very start to the point when she attained the terminology and the language for the stitch. It is fascinating to read. The author lives in the UK (thus the name for this stitch: Albion means "a poetic or literary term for Britain or England (often used in referring to ancient or historical times"). However by now she has taught Albion stitch in several countries. She loves the excitement and experimentation which it engenders. You will too!

After the fundamentals and the basics, the reader will begin with Chapter 1: Flat Albion Stitch. This is the easiest way to understand and work Albion stitch. The projects are as pretty as can be, even if they are your first introduction to the stitch. For example, the second project, which teaches the reader how to increase when she makes this delightful segmented bracelet replete with brightly colored fans and a sewn-in snap clasp, is charming in coral red, coral pink and frosted turquoise seed beads with a trim of Czech frosted pellet beads. Check her helpful note on snap fasteners.
With projects like this to start off, what an inspiration this book promises to be! There are five fabulous project in Chapter 1 alone. The tech illustrations are wonderful throughout the book and the photos, which are plentiful, are super pretty.
Chapter 2 offers Tubular Albion Stitch. As the author says, "Instead of a row of beads, the base row is a ring of beads...Tubular Albion stitch can be used to make pretty beaded beads and is the starting point for working three-dimensional designs." The pretty "Jangle Bangle" from the book's cover is in this chapter, as are four other wonderful projects. The reader will appreciate the unique offering opening each chapter which discusses color inspiration. The author really boosts your imagination with her heady and rich descriptions.
One project I could not take my eyes off of is the first one in Chapter 2. It is a necklace titled "Magic Lanterns". This name is appropriate, because the Tubular Albion stitch is made up here into various sizes of round beads. Strung on hand-dyed silken ropes in two colors of green, this looks like exotic jewelry purloined from Aladdin's Cave. The purples, yellows and brown seed beads play off the larger ginger brown seed beads and green SuperDuo beads. What fun this is! It is perfectly beautiful and very unusual. In this chapter, when the reader arrives at the "Jangle Bangle" check out the great notes the author has added to expand upon this project, if you fell for the book because of it!
Chapter 3 is titled "Ribbons and Lace". It is a study in the popular vintage revival going on presently. Among the author's favorite projects in this book is "Deco Delight." She notes that it is so light and easy to wear, while also making a "beady" statement."
The lovely necklaces are shown in teal and worked in that color, however there is a second necklace shown in dusty rose tones. The reader will love this necklace!
The bracelets following, "Vintage Lace" are also gorgeous. These lacy cuffs are wide and delicate. They lure the viewer in with their charm and subtle impact.
There is a lively pendant sporting crystals among the seed beads and a rivoli in the middle to attract the reader as well. It is called "Novely Lace" and is very appealing worn on a ribbon. It can be adapted to make a cuff bracelet as well, if a few are stitched together.
Moving on to Chapter 4, the reader will be learning about the last but not least part of understanding Albion Stitch. This chapter is concerned with Structure and Links. The author will pull from the previous chapters and explain how to "create designs that bring them together in different ways". This is very exciting for the reader. It more that double the understanding of this great stitch. The author offers these projects in neutral colors and they are stunning. The very first is a riff off of "The Novely Lace" pendant. It is titled "Roundelay Ribbon". There are two of these necklaces shown and the lighter colored one is the one the instructions are for. The basic shape is round here and doesn't hold a rivoli, but the glamour factor of this necklace, with five round circles asymmetrically attached by the basic Albion ribbon stitch is very cool looking. Another project impossible to pass up in this chapter is a cuff called "Maderon Arches". These lovely cuffs are depicted in two colors. The olive and silver is the one the reader will be working on. This is a gorgeous punchy bracelet with a lot of dimension because of the Rizo accent beads. Try this one and fall in love! The author calls it "a wonderfully sturdy statement piece". This sort of design is the reason we love seed beads. You can't beat them for elegant, artisan beauty.

Worked for me

I was interested in getting the original material in one book and this book did that. I applied the program and found it to be successful. I can read books and labels now where before I used reading glasses at 175-200 strength. I haven't been doing the exercises daily now but my eyesight is still good. I believe that relaxing the eye is the key for me. I have trouble with the computer because of a scar on the cornea of my left eye otherwise I would be free of glasses.

About the Author
Cecil Lewis (1898–1997), the longest-living flying ace from WWI, joined Great Britain’s Royal Flying Corps at age sixteen and served as a combat pilot, a test pilot, and a flight instructor during the First and Second World Wars. After the wars, he went on to cofound the BBC, where he was a writer, a producer, and a director. In 1938, he won the Oscar for cowriting the screen adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.

Samuel Hynes is the Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature Emeritus at Princeton University and the author of a number of books, including his highly praise memoir, Flights of Passage, the Robert F. Kennedy Award–winning nonfiction book The Soldier’s Tale, and several major works of literary criticism. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Classic, yes, but at times a bit flat and redundant

Cecil Lewis's SAGITTARIUS RISING probably does deserve its classic status. It is, after al, a memoir of the role of aviation in the First World War. Aviators at that time were true pioneers, and most of them were brave - or foolish - daredevils to boot, tempting fate every time they took to the sky in their fragile machines.

I read the book mainly because this new edition from Penguin Classics (2014) features an introduction by one of my favorite authors, Samuel Hynes. Hynes's FLIGHTS OF PASSAGE is perhaps one of the best WWII memoirs about flying. And, more recently, Hynes wrote an excellent and very personal sort of history of WWI aviators, THE UNSUBSTANTIAL AIR. I loved both of those books.

Unfortunately, although I loved the Introduction, the Lewis book fell a bit flat for me as a memoir. The style seemed overly ornate and the language dated - to be expected, I suppose, but Lewis's many stories and anecdotes of the flying exploits by him and his fellow pilots too quickly became redundant, to the point that I began skimming long portions of the narrative. Yes, he talks of his training, mates lost in fiery crashes, stupid mistakes made by himself and others, of his growing sense of mortality, and, sometimes, burnout and dread which got him posted temporarily back to England from France. He describes his many sorties over the long days of the Somme, near misses and mechanical failures, getting lost and forced landings - all those things are in there. He also gives a glimpse into his post-war days as a civilian pilot instructor in China - mostly a fruitless enterprise.

Lewis wrote his book twenty years after the war, when he was not yet forty, but felt like his life was half over. (In fact he lived to be 99.) He makes a number of comments about war that are still true in these days of global war and terrorist strikes everywhere, and the accompanying political rants so ubiquitous in today's news.

"People who cannot learn from their mistakes are damned ... What have we learned from ours? We are, collectively, the most evil and destructive of human creatures. We back up our greeds and jealousies with religion and patriotism ... No one knows where to put their faith, so they believe nothing. Moral and social standards are confused ... The fear of feeling the ground slipping from under their feet drives whole nations back into mediaeval despotism ... But emulating the ostrich, though it may bring relief for a space, does not solve the problem. It leads straight back to self-immolation on the altar of outworn patriotism, that is, to barbarism ..."

Lewis made these observations in 1936. Hmm ... Not much has changed in eighty years, has it?

He contemplated higher things too, remembering "the cynical wartime prayer: 'O God - if there is a God, save my soul - if I have a soul.'" But Lewis believed he had a soul - "a drop of the Life Force" - although he wasn't sure about heaven and displayed a dark sense of humor.

"If, in heaven, my grosser qualities were to be purged away, leaving me all 'good,' so much the worse. The devil was the pepper in my curry; remove it, and how flat the dish would taste."

And, speaking of his 'grosser qualities,' Lewis is disappointingly circumspect about his 'jolly good times' when he was on home leave, although there are intimations of a girl friend or two. Perhaps it's his 'gentlemen don't tell tales' training. Nevertheless, there is not very much of his personal life here, aside from some time spent with this philosopher father, who enlisted in the army, refusing to take a commission.

Bottom line: SAGITTARIUS RISING is a worthy, if not terribly interesting book. I would recommend it to readers interested in the history of aviation and warfare. (But I still think that the Hynes books are much better.)

GREAT BOOK

Cecil Lewis first came to my attention when I read "Captain Ball" by Alex Devaney. His words, "The most self-confident aces began to wonder when their turn would come… Faced by the empty chairs of men you had laughed and joked with at lunch. And, miraculously, you were still there. Until tomorrow…", quoted there, just touched me, and my curiosity about him led me to this book. It has been on my To Read list ever since.

Now I finally got to it, it was fantastic.

Cecil Lewis lived in dangerous times and penned his memories of them (some 20 years later) in a wonderful way. He didn’t seem to make himself look anything other than what he really was. At least, I didn’t get the feeling he was trying to show himself as a hero. Yes, he spoke of his feats. But he as easily told of his mistakes and errors, even making fun of himself on their account.
Quite a character, he seemed to be. And a great read this book was.
Wish I’d known the man himself.

Truly a Classic

For those of us who love reading, who treasure a very few books as much beloved friends, we are sometimes fortunate enough to find a volume that touches our hearts, and is instantly propelled to a special level of reverence.
Such is Cecil Lewis's Sagittarius Rising. This incredibly sensitive and perceptive man's book, while concerning many months of the WWI years, is not a war story. Instead, the author speaks from the perspective of 20 years after the events described, to tell of living these years, of his daily joys and fears, of how it felt to be passing through tumultuous, terribly important times, knowing that he was experiencing history, and trying to show us that history is made by ordinary men.
Cecil Lewis led an extraordinary life by any measure. Sagittarius Rising is an extraordinary tale.
